The Vistula forms the western boundary of Opole County and is considered one of the county’s major tourist attractions. Protected landscapes also shape the character of the destination: loess ravines, natural forests and traces of cultural history offer different starting points for planning your trip. If you are looking for accommodation, this variety can help you first decide what you want to focus on during your stay – nature, history or both.

Landscapes of forests, ravines and the Vistula Valley

The Wrzelowiecki Landscape Park lies entirely within Opole County. Established in 1990, it covers 4,998 hectares; its protected zone extends over 13,625 hectares. The landscape includes loess ravines and natural forests with valuable flora, including steppe communities. Cultural monuments and the remains of palace parks complement its natural features. These figures show the area covered by the protected landscape, while its varied features draw attention both to nature and to the region’s history.

Another landscape landmark is the part of Kazimierski Landscape Park located in the county, which covers 1,690 hectares. Its protected zone covers 4,560 hectares and lies within the municipalities of Karczmiska and WilkĂłw. The Skarpa Dobrska Nature Reserve is also here, with ravines up to 40 metres deep. Xerothermic grasslands grow on its steep limestone and loess slopes. Taken together, these details provide a concrete comparison of different protected landscapes, without reducing them to a single natural feature.

The Vistula is also a point of reference: the park surrounding the 18th-century palace complex in Józefów nad Wisłą offers views of the Vistula Valley. The river landscape and historic sites thus come together in the impressions described here of Opole County.

Archaeology, churches and historic buildings

In Chodel stands the Parish Church of the Holy Trinity and the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, dating from the mid-16th century. Its Gothic-Renaissance architecture includes an original ribbed vault in the presbytery; the church also preserves Renaissance tombs of the Maciejewski family. In Józefów nad Wisłą, the Bernardine monastery complex is another notable group of buildings. It comprises the Baroque Corpus Christi Church, built between 1730 and 1743, the former Bernardine monastery, a bell tower and a grand entrance gate.

The Grodzisko w Żmijowiskach open-air archaeological museum displays reconstructed fortifications, a section of palisade, a gate and several residential huts. During the season from May to September, organized groups can take themed tours, attend ceramics workshops and take part in the outdoor game “In Search of the Lost Treasure.” If these activities matter to your plans, check the seasonal dates before your visit. The centre also focuses on experimental archaeology, with topics including historical pottery, metallurgy, tar-making and food preparation; archaeological experiments are currently supported.

Routes to help you plan your trip

The “Dolina Chodelki” route begins at the boundary between Opole County and Lublin County and ends in Podgórz. In the wider region, the Grodziska nad Chodelką themed hiking trail runs for about 15 kilometres. It passes four marked early medieval Slavic hillforts dating from the 8th to 10th centuries, each with an information board. The two route descriptions differ in both length and destinations: one links the county boundary with Podgórz, while the other focuses on a series of archaeological sites.

When choosing a base, you can therefore consider whether you would like to include protected landscapes, historic buildings or archaeological sites in your trip. The places Opole Lubelskie, Poniatowa, Podgórz, Laziska k Opola Lubelskiego and Chodel offer the closest reference points among the destination pages for this county. At the same level, you can also find destination pages for Parczew, Biłgoraj and Świdnik.
