An Old Town inspired by the Renaissance ideal
The Old Town of Zamość is an outstanding example of a Central European city from the late 16th century, planned and built as an ideal city according to the theories of the Italian Renaissance. Its original rectangular street plan has been preserved, as have parts of the surrounding fortifications. These features make the city layout itself a subject of a visit: notice how the regular plan and the remains of the fortifications shape the historic cityscape.
A striking landmark is the Great Market Square. The city's two most important axial streets intersect here, and the square is surrounded by arcaded merchants' houses. If you are interested in historic urban planning, it is worth looking at both the course of the street axes and the unified design of the square. Jewish history and architecture
The synagogue in the Old Town was built between 1610 and 1620 and is considered an outstanding example of late Renaissance Jewish architecture in Poland. It is managed by the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage and is open to visitors. The restored Centrum „Synagoga” houses the Multimedia Museum of the History of Jews in Zamość and the Surrounding Area. The architecture and museum thus offer two different ways to explore the site: you can appreciate the building as an important work of Jewish architecture while also learning about the history of the Jewish community in Zamość and the surrounding area.
Fortifications and garrison history
The city's military past can also be explored through specific sites and exhibitions. Nadszaniec has an observation terrace with an exhibition of cannons. An exhibition there also covers the history of the Zamość Fortress garrison from the 17th to the 19th century and includes uniforms and weapons. The original wooden Arsenał building was constructed between May 1582 and July 1583 to a design by Bernardo Morando. The precise construction dates and its designer place this building in the city's early history; the exhibition at Nadszaniec, by contrast, focuses on a later period.
Zoo and city reservoir
The Ogród Zoologiczny w Zamościu im. Stefana Milera presents a diverse range of flora and fauna. It is home to around 2,000 animals from 260 species. The grounds also include a climbing park, as well as places to eat. A visit to the zoo therefore offers more than just the animals; you can take these other facilities on the grounds into account when planning your day.
At the Zamość city reservoir, there are 13 designated places for swimming and fishing. A nature trail there is intended for pedestrians and cyclists.
