Reservoir and routes through Krasnobród

In summer, the sandy beaches at the reservoir invite you to sunbathe and swim, with pine forests surrounding them. This makes the water a clear seasonal focus in Krasnobród. If you prefer to plan your trip around trails, two marked routes pass through the town: the red Szlak partyzancki and the green Szlak im. Władysławy Podobińskiej. Follow the local trail markers as you go.

For a cycling trip, the blue-marked Roztoczański Szlak Rowerowy passes through Krasnobród on the Zwierzyniec–Krasnobród–Majdan Sopocki route. The routes therefore differ in more than just their colors: two named trails pass through the town, while the cycling route connects Krasnobród as one section of a route with the named endpoints. When planning, you can choose between hiking trails in the town and a designated cycling route without treating them as the same route.

Winter activities in Krasnobród include torchlit sleigh rides along forest trails and through ravines. These winter rides through a different landscape offer a seasonal contrast to summer swimming.

Quarry, views and geological history

The “Kamieniołom” geological documentation site is located at a disused quarry. Its exposed rock face is about 30 meters high and 165 meters long. It bears imprints of plants and animals that lived many millions of years ago. These approximate measurements convey the scale of the rock face, while the fossil imprints take you far beyond the town’s more recent history.

A lookout tower, built in 2002, also stands at the quarry. From there, you can enjoy a panorama of Krasnobród. Geology and views come together at this named site: the rock face and its imprints tell a story of the distant past, while the tower looks out over the town today.

Church, monastery and stories passed down through generations

The Baroque Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (pw. Nawiedzenia Najświętszej Marii Panny) and its associated monastery were built between 1690 and 1699. The monastery church and neighboring buildings offer glimpses into different aspects of history. On the upper floor of the monastery in the Marian Sanctuary (Sanktuarium Maryjne), the “Wystawa Maryjna” features Marian shrines from across Poland.

Next to the monastery stands a larch granary with a shingle roof, dating from 1795. It houses a collection of harvest wreaths, which is added to every year with wreaths brought to Krasnobród for the diocesan harvest thanksgiving celebration in September. The collection thus connects the historic building with a recurring tradition. The 18th-century Chapel on the Water (Kaplica na Wodzie) is about 500 meters from the monastery and is also known as the “Chapel of the Apparitions” (Kaplica Objawień). According to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to Jakub Ruszczyk at this site in 1640. The reported apparition and the later chapel belong to different points in time.

More activities by the water

Recreational fishing is possible at three bodies of water: the Zalew wypoczynkowy, the Olender and the Podkaplica Pond. These named fishing spots add to the reservoir as a theme for your trip, though swimming and fishing need not take place at the same locations.
