Deszczno combines a settlement history documented as far back as the Bronze Age with traces of religious history and commemorative culture. Two hiking trails include the town in their routes and differ considerably in length and character. You can get to know Deszczno through both its history and the profiles of its trails.

Early Traces and Local History

Deszczno is one of the oldest settlements in the Toruń-Eberswalde Urstromtal valley. Settlement here is documented as early as the Bronze Age, around 1800–1700 BC. Two hoards from this period contain a bronze boss, an arm ring, a pin, a necklace and an axe. These different finds complement the dating with concrete examples and make the area’s early history archaeologically tangible.

The history of the church also provides specific points of reference. In 1839, a new church was built in Deszczno on the site of the former cemetery. The “Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross” in Deszczno was rebuilt in 1892 and is listed in the register of historic monuments. The new building, its later reconstruction and its listed status are distinct aspects of the town’s history.

A monument in the form of a Piast eagle commemorates the soldiers of the Second Polish Army, many of whom settled in Deszczno. In the history of transport, 1 December 1896 is also significant: on that day, the first train on the Skwierzyna–Zamość line passed through Deszczno. Together with the archaeological finds and details of the church, this adds commemorative culture and railways to the town’s historical themes.

Hiking Trails with Different Profiles

The route and its course are relevant when choosing a trail. Green hiking trail No. 3 is 51.4 km long and starts or ends at Deszczno railway station. It runs mostly along the flood embankments on the Warta and through the Gorzów Basin. This makes it the longer of the two routes mentioned here, passing through a larger landscape area.

Yellow-marked hiking trail No. 10 is 18.9 km long and technically easy; it offers a way to explore Deszczno. From Borek, it runs via Deszczno, Karnin, Łagodzin and Ulim to the embankment at Niwica. At kilometre 6.2, it reaches the start of a pedestrian and vehicle track in Deszczno. While route No. 3 focuses on the landscapes along the Warta and in the Gorzów Basin, route No. 10 highlights a sequence of named places and the specific section of trail in Deszczno.

Nature Reserve in the Municipality

The Santockie Zakole ornithological and botanical nature reserve lies within the municipality of Deszczno. This connection to the landscape complements the perspectives on the town and its routes with a protected area at the municipal level.
