Cemeteries and historic memorial sites
Sarnaki has four historic cemeteries: the churchyard, the so-called Old Cemetery, the Jewish cemetery and the parish cemetery. The latter is still in use today. The four names make clear that the cemeteries do not all have the same status: alongside historic burial grounds, the townscape also includes a parish cemetery that is still in use. You can keep these different connections in mind when exploring the town’s history.
Another historic landmark stands in the market square. A monument was unveiled there on May 14, 1995, commemorating the successful acquisition for the Allied forces of the V-2 rocket tested by the Germans in the region. It connects Sarnaki with an event from the history of the Second World War. The specific occasion and unveiling date give the monument a clear historical context, rather than making it just a general memorial.
A brick manor house is another part of Sarnaki’s architectural heritage. It was built in 1830 and once belonged to the owners of Sarnaki. Today it has been converted and is owned by the Sarnaki Forest District. Its construction date, former ownership and present-day owner describe different periods of its history. Together with the monument and cemeteries, the manor house broadens the view beyond any one historical period.
Brewery history and cycling nearby
Original industrial buildings from an old brewery can be seen in Sarnaki. Its origins date back to the 18th century. This adds another kind of historical trace to the cemeteries and manor house: buildings from the area’s industrial history. The brewery buildings can thus be considered a distinct point of interest alongside the memorial sites and older architecture.
If you are also considering a cycling route during your stay, the “SKÓRZYNIEC” route is in the vicinity of Sarnaki, not in the town itself. It is about 10 kilometres long, marked in black and was created in 2022. It starts in the northern part of Stare Hołowczyce. From there, the route passes through fields and hills, as well as the forests of Podlaski Przełom Bugu Landscape Park. It ends at a county road, where it joins the Ziemi Łosickiej cycling route. Its length, course and connection describe the ride more specifically than a general recommendation to go cycling.
The two highlights therefore differ in both location and form: the cemeteries, monument, manor house and brewery buildings are in Sarnaki; the cycling route starts in Stare Hołowczyce and leads through the park’s landscape. If you are considering Sarnaki as a destination, you can therefore decide whether your plans are focused mainly on the historic sites in town or the cycling route nearby.
