Stare Hołowczyce is the northern part of Hołowczyce; the other parts are called Nowe Hołowczyce and Hołowczyce-Kolonia. Hołowczyce is a roadside village with five kilometres of continuous development. For orientation, it is worth looking at two levels: the northern part of the village and the history and leisure traces across the wider Hołowczyce area.
Stare Hołowczyce and the Village Landscape
There are pavements along Voivodeship Road 811 in Stare Hołowczyce. A municipal plan from 2022 mentions them; check their condition before your visit if you plan your routes around them. At the edge of Stare Hołowczyce, there are places listed under the names “Karczma” and “Klepaczówka”. These names provide concrete landmarks for local orientation.
Religious and Historical Traces
A wayside shrine stands on the former property of the blacksmith Wacław Parafiniuk, where May devotions were held. This connects a specific place in the northern part of the village with a religious tradition. The historical context extends beyond this part of the village: around 1580, Hołowczyce was listed in the tax register under the name “Olonczyce”.
In the 19th century, most of the people living in Hołowczyce were farmers of Ruthenian and Mazovian origin who were Greek Catholic. In 1905, a procession of residents of Hołowczyce went to the church in Sarnaki to adopt the Roman Catholic faith. These accounts reflect different stages in the region’s religious history.
The history of the occupation period is also part of the wider Hołowczyce story: Jan and Jadwiga Grobicki gave shelter to a Jewish boy. He survived the war working as a farmhand on their farm. In 1989, Jan and Jadwiga Grobicki received a medal and the title “Righteous Among the Nations” for this. A small wooden manor house remained in Hołowczyce until the post-war years; an inn stood at the northern end.
Cycling Routes and Past Leisure Activities
Another local landmark is the road from Hołowczyce to the Zabuże estate. It still exists and is known in local tradition as Korolówka. The name of the road adds a named route in the wider area to the village’s history.
For cycling trips, a municipal report from 2022 lists more than ten kilometres of designated and marked cycling routes in the Hołowczyce and Zabuże forest complex. The report also lists rest shelters set up there. Check the current condition of the routes and markings before setting out.
Another leisure trace belongs explicitly to the past: at the second of the places in Hołowczyce known as “Mogiłki”, people used to go sledding and skiing because of the steep slope. The designated cycling routes and the former sledding and skiing activities represent different forms of leisure use.
