Horoszki Małe can be explored through traces from different periods: an early medieval hillfort stands alongside the history of a village that existed as an independent settlement by the early 19th century at the latest. Other points of interest include a protected linden tree, the former school building, and memorials from the 20th century. If you like to consider history and specific places when choosing a destination, Horoszki Małe offers several themes to guide your further planning.

From the Hillfort to the Village’s History

An early medieval hillfort is located in Horoszki Małe. It takes us back to a time long before the documented history of the village. There is a more precise reference point for the village’s later history: Horoszki Małe existed as an independent village by the early 19th century at the latest and is shown on an Austrian map from 1801 to 1804. This allows two distinct time periods to be identified—the early history of the hillfort site and the documented history of the village as an independent settlement.

Another notable local feature is a natural one: beside P. Wedziuk’s property, along the Bonin–Horoszki Mała road, stands a protected small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata). The tree has a trunk circumference of 123 centimetres and is 24 metres tall. Its species, measurements, and protected status make it a specific natural monument, adding a natural point of interest to the historical themes.

The Former School Building and Its History

On the outskirts of Horoszki Małe, a brick primary school building was erected in a pine forest in 1957 and 1958. It also included an apartment for a teacher. The site’s history is therefore connected not only with distant periods but also with school life and the village community. The building was sold to a private owner in 2006 for tourism and commercial use. At the time of publication in 2016, the words “Zajazd Leśny” were on its façade.

The history of the school site also includes earlier recreational and community activities. The school in Horoszki Małe held sports competitions as well as handball and football matches for neighbouring schools and rural youth. In the 1960s, there were Scout groups in Horoszki Małe; campfires, bivouacs, and sled rides involving local residents were often held. These examples give an impression of the different kinds of community activities associated with the place.

Memorials in the Village

Unknown Russian soldiers from the Second World War are buried in the forest beside the Konstantynów–Sarnaki road, near the former primary school building. At the time of publication, the school building bore the name “Zajazd Leśny.” These two details locate different forms of remembrance within the same local history, without suggesting that they are the same.

Another memorial is a low, blue-painted wooden cross dating from 1949. It stands in Horoszki Małe and is surrounded by a wooden fence. Together with the hillfort, the village’s history, and the former school site, it gives a picture of a place shaped by individual historical traces rather than a single theme.

From 1976 to 2000, pre-military defence training camps were held for students at secondary schools. Their dates distinguish these camps from the sports events and Scout group activities. If you are considering Horoszki Małe as a destination, you can weigh up whether you are especially interested in early history, natural monuments, or local places of remembrance.
