Cityscape and Architectural History
Krapkowicka Baszta, the tower of the Upper Gate, was built in the second half of the 14th century and remodeled around 1580. The tower houses a tourist information office, exhibition rooms on several floors and a viewing terrace with a telescope. Architectural history and modern visitor facilities come together here in the same place.
Krapkowicki Rynek features a typically medieval layout: a fountain stands in the middle of the rectangular square, old townhouses line its sides, and narrow streets lead onto the square. Krapkowice Castle is within the city's administrative boundaries, close to the old town. This imposing, four-sided building dates from the late Renaissance.
The castle's early history includes a historical assumption: it is believed to have existed as early as the 13th century. In 1275, Krapkowice was granted town rights by Władysław, Duke of Opole. The castle ruins in Otmęt preserve remains of living quarters, the ruins of the southeastern tower, a perimeter wall and a semicircular bastion at the southwestern corner. The oldest wall remains date from the 16th century. Krapkowice thus brings together a late Renaissance building and surviving ruins as different evidence of its architectural history.
Stories and Activities in the City
The Obuwniczy Szlak links mysterious bronze shoes with stories and legends from Krapkowice's past centuries. The shoes are named Laciek, Mieszczuch, Kopytko, Pepoż, Rogatek, Rolszpila, Tempel and Wyczynówka; QR codes share the stories. At approximately 6 km long, the route has a clearly defined length. Its distinctive way of exploring the city's history is through the named shoe figures and the stories revealed by QR codes.
Water offers another perspective on Krapkowice. At Port Jachtowy Krapkowice, where the Osobłoga meets the Oder, you can rent kayaks, pedal boats and boats. Trips on the Oder are also available, with views of Krapkowice's medieval castle. The rental options and river trips offer different ways to include the water in your travel plans.
The Powiat Krapkowicki as a Regional Setting
The Powiat Krapkowicki lies in the central part of Opole Voivodeship, on the upper Oder and at the foot of Góra Świętej Anny. The “Doliny Odry” settlement landscape extends across the Powiat through the municipalities of Walce, Zdzieszowice, Krapkowice and Gogolin. The Powiat also includes the Łęg Zdzieszowicki and Żywocickie Łęgi Natura 2000 sites. The Powiat Krapkowicki provides the wider geographical setting for your trip to Krapkowice.
In the valleys of the Oder and Osobłoga, the landscape of the Powiat is conducive to hiking, cycling and birdwatching. An interactive cycling map has been created for cyclists, featuring a detailed network of routes, roads and cycle paths. This allows them to choose a route based on the time available, preferred distance and difficulty level. The map therefore offers a way to tailor trip planning to your own schedule and fitness preferences.
There are also other attractions at the Powiat level. The “Park&Ride&Chillout w sercu Opolszczyzny” zone has two picnic shelters, a grill and benches, and is intended for social, recreational, sporting and educational activities. In Januszkowice, Jezioro Srebrne offers a swimming lake, fishing spots and accommodation on the water. These regional options are quite different from the architecture and city walk in Krapkowice.
