Krapkowice combines a history of medieval origins with striking buildings and memories of earlier settlements. For centuries, two distinct places existed here: the urban trading centre of Krapkowice on the left bank of the Oder and the old fishing settlement of Otmęt on the right bank. Today, this history can be discovered in very different places—from the remains of fortifications and church architecture to industrial heritage sites.

Traces of Trade, Craftsmanship and Fortifications

The industrial heritage sites include former paper mills with a beautiful red-brick clock tower, as well as two lime kilns. The surviving fortifications tell the story of the city in a different way. They include the defensive tower at the Upper Gate, dating from the 14th century, and an adjoining section of the defensive wall on Basztowa Street. Fragments of the wall have also survived in the city’s northeastern corner; in the southwestern district, a sunken section of wall remains. Those interested in different types of construction can compare these traces with the disused railway bridge, which now carries a footbridge.

The Krapkowicka Baszta, also known as Wieża Bramy Górnej or Wieża Bramy Prudnickiej, is a rubble-stone tower in the Gothic-Renaissance style. It was built in the second half of the 14th century and remodelled around 1580. From its viewing terrace, you can see the city panorama, St. Anne’s Mountain and the Opawskie Mountains. On days with poorer weather, the telescope installed there may be useful. Exhibition rooms with display cases occupy several floors. The Krapkowice hejnał is played from the Baszta every day at noon.

Church, Views and a City Route

St. Nicholas Church also offers historical and architectural details: its present form dates from the late 14th century. Although the building has been remodelled several times, Gothic features have survived, including rib vaults in the presbytery. Its furnishings include a 16th-century stone baptismal font and an ornately decorated monstrance dating from 1744.

The Obuwniczy Szlak links Krapkowice’s sights with the city’s history. Shoe symbols marked with QR codes lead to points of interest and provide historical context. The route thus complements views of individual buildings with a story about the city. When planning your day, you can decide whether to focus more on architectural history or connect different stops related to the city’s past.

Access to the courtyard of Krapkowice Castle depends on whether the school is open. There is a historic well in the courtyard, probably dating back to the Middle Ages. Check whether the school is open before visiting. Water sports equipment is available for hire at Krapkowicka Marina, which also has a campsite. As these are visitor services, it is advisable to check their current availability in advance.

Which Accommodation Suits Your Plans?

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Krapkowice, it is best to choose where to stay based on the subjects that interest you most: medieval architectural history, industrial heritage sites, or the connection between the city’s history and the Oder. The experiences described differ considerably in character, offering a practical basis for deciding what you would like to focus on during your stay without assuming a particular itinerary. If you visit the Baszta, you may be interested in its views and exhibition cases, while the remains of the fortifications and St. Nicholas Church offer other historical perspectives. If you plan to visit the marina, you should also check the availability of its services.
