Church History and Castle Architecture
The first brick church in Proskau was built in 1578. St. George’s Church (Kościół św. Jerzego) was burned down in 1644 during the Thirty Years’ War by troops under Field Marshal Lennart Torstensson. Its reconstruction was completed in 1687, giving it a Baroque form. The sequence from the first brick building through its destruction to its restoration brings the different chapters of the church’s history to life.
Proskau Castle (Zamek w Prószkowie) is a four-winged building with a rectangular courtyard, bastion-like corners and two towers on the front façade. The exterior façade retains the Prószkowski family’s coats of arms, dating from 1563. Other surviving details include stucco decorations with ceiling paintings in the Knights’ Hall and an 18th-century marble fountain basin in the courtyard. These features are found on the exterior, inside the building and in the courtyard, giving the castle its distinctive architectural details.
Arboretum Park and Blacksmithing Tradition
The arboretum park in Proskau was established in 1866–1867 and now covers about 15 hectares. Its collection includes around 46 oak species. The trees come from China, Manchuria, Japan and Europe. Together, the park’s dated origins, variety of oaks and different regions of origin give a clear impression of its focus.
In the Kuźnia in Proskau, visitors can see a blacksmith’s workshop preserved in a condition comparable to workshops from 100 to 150 years ago. The Muzeum Kowalstwa hosts demonstrations of traditional blacksmithing techniques. During workshops, participants can touch objects made there. Cycling Tour and Nature Nearby
The municipality of Proskau invites visitors to take a cycling tour of crosses and chapels scattered across its villages, fields and meadows. The tour thus covers the municipality and its dispersed settlements, with crosses and chapels as its central theme.
Nearby, the Staw Nowokuźnicki nature reserve lies near Nowa Kuźnia. A wooden footbridge several hundred metres long runs along the pond’s eastern shore. At its end stands an observation tower overlooking the densely vegetated water. The footbridge and viewpoint draw attention to the lakeshore landscape, offering a different natural setting from the arboretum’s collection of trees and oaks.
