Railway Station and Architectural History
Mońki railway station was built in the 1930s to a design by architect Stefan Szyller. It is an artistically significant example of manor-style railway architecture. This links the history of railway construction with an architectural language that gives the building its own architectural classification.
The station’s former use is also part of its history. The ground floor of the historic building housed a buffet, a ticket office, a waiting room, and a freight scale. These facilities give an impression of the different functions the station once served: travelers could buy refreshments, purchase tickets, and wait there, while the freight scale was part of station operations.
Regional History in Mońki
The Moniecka Izba Historyczna opened in 2024 at Szkoła Podstawowa nr 2 in Mońki. Its purpose is to preserve and share knowledge about important events and people in regional and national history. Alongside the station’s architectural history, the historical development of the region and the country is also a focus.
A cycling route offers a different way to explore the surroundings: it runs from Mońki via Sikory, Kalinówka Kościelna, and Przytulanka, then returns to Mońki. The same place is therefore both the starting and return point, while the route connects several named locations. No distance or journey time is given for this route. Within the wider Moniecki destination, the railway station in Mońki is in the town center, west of the DK Białystok–Ełk road. National Road 65, which connects Gołdap with the border crossing at Bobrowniki, runs through Mońki municipality. Railway line No. 38 also runs through the municipality.
Mońki’s architectural history also includes the parish Church of Our Lady of Częstochowa and St. Casimir. Built in the 1920s in the Neo-Baroque style to a design by Warsaw architect Stefan Szyller, it is one of the attractions of Mońki municipality. The station and the church offer a concrete comparison: both were designed by Szyller, but date from different decades and represent different architectural styles.
Further traces of the past can be found elsewhere in the wider Moniecki destination. The manor house in Sikory is among the oldest wooden residential buildings in Podlaskie Voivodeship. The remains of a manor house in Hornostaje and of a former manor garden in Wojszki are among the attractions of Mońki municipality. Pisarowa Góra, near the village of Krzeczkowo, is associated with traces of early settlement.
Traditional crafts are also part of the Moniecki region’s cultural heritage. The 2025 competition rules name the Moniecki Ośrodek Kultury in Mońki as the organizer of the 29th Voivodeship Competition for “Zdobnictwa Obrzędowego Cyklu Wiosennego i Świąt Wielkanocnych” (Ceremonial Decorations for the Spring Cycle and Easter). Competition entries include decorated eggs, palms, floral decorations, straw mobiles, and paper cutouts. The decorated eggs are made using traditional techniques; the other decorations are expected to reflect local tradition.
