Getting there and finding your way

The national road 65 runs through the municipality of Mońki and serves as a major regional route. It connects Gołdap with the border crossing at Bobrowniki. Railway line No. 38 also runs through the municipality. Mońki railway station is in the town centre, west of the DK Białystok–Ełk road. If you are considering travelling by train, check the timetable for a suitable connection on your travel date. The road and railway lines help you get your bearings in the region; the station also provides a specific reference point within Mońki.

Architecture in Mońki

The railway station is an example of railway architecture in the dworkowy style of the interwar period. Its ground floor once served several functions: it housed a buffet, ticket counter, waiting room and goods scales. This historic layout illustrates the building’s former role in passenger and freight transport. Its location in the town centre also makes it a useful point of reference when exploring Mońki’s architectural history.

The parish church of Our Lady of Częstochowa and St Casimir in Mońki presents a different architectural style. It was built in the 1920s in the Neo-Baroque style, to a design by Warsaw architect Stefan Szyller. The listed church is one of the municipality’s attractions. The station and church can be seen as two distinct features of the town’s history: on the one hand, dworkowy railway architecture; on the other, a church with Neo-Baroque forms.

Historic traces across the municipality

Sikory is home to a manor house that ranks among the oldest wooden residential buildings in the Podlaskie Voivodeship. Near the village of Krzeczkowo lies Pisarowa Góra, associated with traces of early settlement. These places shift the focus from architecture in Mońki to the history of the surrounding landscape. In practical terms, this means you can consider historic connections at various points across the municipality, as well as buildings in the town itself.

Traces of the former estates at Waśki, Hornostaje and Krzeczkowo have survived despite the extensive destruction of their buildings. Attractions in the municipality of Mońki also include the remains of an estate in Hornostaje and the remains of a former manor garden in Wojszki. The distinction between these features is noteworthy: Hornostaje is associated with a former estate, while Wojszki is associated with a garden. Both add evidence of the former estate landscape to the area’s architectural history.

Cycling route and regional traditions

A cycling route runs from Mońki through Sikory, Kalinówka Kościelna and Przytulanka, then back to Mońki. The order of the places describes a loop starting and ending in Mońki. Alongside the architectural and historical themes, this gives you a specific sequence of places to use when planning your trip. A cultural competition offers another point of interest. A 2025 regulation lists the Moniecki Ośrodek Kultury in Mońki as the organiser of the 29th Voivodeship Competition for “Zdobnictwa Obrzędowego Cyklu Wiosennego i Świąt Wielkanocnych” (Ceremonial Decorations for the Spring Cycle and Easter). Entries include decorated Easter eggs, Easter palms, floral decorations, straw mobiles and paper cut-outs. The Easter eggs are made using traditional techniques; the other decorations are expected to reflect local tradition.
