In Godziszewo, lakeside and riverside landscapes meet a long history. The village lies on the Styna River and by the extensive Lake Godziszewskie, which also extends into Demlin and Obozin. For your travel plans, this makes it a place whose character can be explored through both its waters and its distinctive historic buildings.

Hills, water and getting around

Godziszewo’s landscape is hilly: its numerous rises and depressions date back to the Baltic glaciation. At 105.7 metres above sea level, Święta Góra is the village’s highest point. These changes in elevation shape the landscape, as do its two bodies of water. The Styna River and Lake Godziszewskie provide clear reference points for finding your way around.

Roads also run through Godziszewo in two directions. The route between Starogard Gdański and Gdańsk runs from south to north, while the route between Skarszewy and Tczew runs from west to east.

Lake, river and trails

Lake Godziszewskie is associated with recreation and leisure activities on the water. The Styna River offers something different: it is important for fishing from the lake to its mouth; there are three fishing districts along it, and the entire river is designated as a fishing water. Those interested in the region’s waterways will find both a lake for recreation and a river connected with fishing.

The northern section of the Jezior-Kociewskich Trail runs between Skarszewy and Starogard Gdański. It is marked in red and is 38.2 kilometres long. At kilometre 11.5, it passes Lake Godziszewskie, and at kilometre 11.6, the Styna River. The two kilometre markers are close together, showing how near the lake and river are to each other along this section. Check the trail’s current condition before setting out.

Church and historic traces

The Church of St. John of Nepomuk was built in 1748 as a single-nave Baroque structure on a small rise. Its original Rococo interior, considered one of the most valuable in Kociewie, contributes to its art-historical significance. The entrance hall also contains a Renaissance tomb for Jan Wiesiołowski and his wife, Justyna z Branickich. The construction date, architecture and tomb bring different historical periods into focus within the same village.

Other historic features include a Roman Catholic cemetery dating from the beginning of the 20th century, recorded in the monument inventory, and surviving former mill-related buildings on the Styna River. Finds of hand-formed pottery suggest that a settlement may already have existed here in the 8th century, during the Early Middle Ages. Godziszewo’s classification among Pomerania’s oldest settlements is also part of its recorded history.

Choose Godziszewo as your destination

Whether you are weighing a stay focused on the water against one with a greater interest in cultural history, Godziszewo offers something for both: Lake Godziszewskie and the Styna River on one hand, and the church, tomb and other historic traces on the other. Information about trails and waterways can help you organise your outings; the village’s history adds specific buildings and finds to your view of the landscape. Find a hotel in Godziszewo and decide which of these sides you would like to explore more closely during your trip.
