Townscape and history
At the entrance to Nowy Wiec from the direction of Skarszewy stands a roadside chapel dating from the late 19th century, which was rebuilt in 2006. It is listed as a WEZ/GEZ heritage site.
The history of Marta Wiecka is also connected with the village: she was born in Nowy Wiec on January 12, 1874, and was the third of 13 children of the wealthy landowner Marcello Wiecki and his wife, Paolina Kamrowska Wiecka. The monument to Marta Wiecka in Nowy Wiec is classified as a tourist attraction as well as an object of tangible cultural heritage in the “Monuments and Memorial Plaques” category.
Remembrance
Nowy Wiec is home to a memorial cemetery for the victims of German crimes committed during the Second World War. The mortal remains of Poles murdered by the German Selbstschutz between 1939 and 1944 are buried in this memorial cemetery. A stone memorial plaque lists the names of identified victims, including clergy and residents of the region.
In October and November 1939, a detention site and execution site of the Selbstschutz were located in Nowy Wiec on a farm belonging to Władysław Wiecki. The memorial cemetery is associated with the regional context of Kociewie and the Starogard Lakeland. It lies in a simple, rural, natural setting whose tranquillity invites quiet reflection.
Routes and transport
The green Skarszewski Trail runs from Sopot Kamienny Potok to Skarszewy and is 81.6 km long. In Nowy Wiec, it is marked at route kilometres 68.7/12.0. According to PTTK, the Skarszewski Trail is suitable for bicycle tourism.
A PKS bus stop on the Gdańsk–Kościerzyna route is also marked in Nowy Wiec.
