Hiking trails with different focuses
The green PTTK hiking trail “Along Lake Czarne” (“Wzdłuż Jeziora Czarnego”) runs from Skórcz to Osiek. It starts at the former Skórcz railway station on ul. Dworcowa. In town, it passes the parish cemetery and the Church of All Saints (Kościół pw. Wszystkich Świętych), then continues along ul. Główna. After leaving Skórcz, forest paths through the Bory Tucholskie take it around Lake Czarne (Jezioro Czarne). The route therefore includes both sections in town and forest scenery beyond it.
A 25 km suburban hiking route starts and ends in Skórcz. It passes through forests and alongside numerous large lakes. Along the way are the Czarne and Kałębnica foresters’ lodges, the lakes Tuszynek, Słone, and Głuche, as well as Skrzynia, Skorzenno, and Osiek. Its length can be taken into account when planning your day; the sequence of places and bodies of water mentioned also gives a concrete impression of the route.
Another hiking route, about 18 km long, also starts and ends in Skórcz. It runs through Barłożno, past the Janka River, and on to Kościelna Jania, Stara Jania, and Mirotki. Its focus is the early settlement of the Jania estates, as well as the life and anti-German Order policies of the knight Jan z Jani. If you are interested in this historical context, you can choose the route accordingly; if you mainly want to include forests and lakes, the other trails described offer different focuses. The lengths of 25 km and about 18 km differ considerably and provide two specific points of reference for planning your trip.
Town history and church art
The medieval urban layout of Skórcz is listed in the register of monuments and has remained unchanged since the mid-14th century. West of the layout is an area containing a settlement from the Early Iron Age, which is subject to strict archaeological protection. The town’s historical themes therefore include both its medieval urban structure and a much older settlement site.
The Gothic Church of All Saints (Kościół pw. Wszystkich Świętych) dates from the 14th century and contains Late Gothic and Baroque furnishings. Its building history also includes several clearly dated stages: the gable between the nave and chancel was built around 1500. Side aisles were added in 1927. The tower was destroyed in 1945 and rebuilt in 1957. These different layers of history offer culture enthusiasts several specific ways to explore the building.
