Stuhm: Castle, Lakes and Cycling Routes

Stuhm lies on an isthmus between Jezioro Sztumskie and Jezioro Barlewickie; the two lakes were once connected. An isthmus is a narrow strip of land between bodies of water and describes the area’s distinctive location. At Jezioro Sztumskie, an illuminated walking and cycling path about 5 km long goes around the lake. This approximate length makes the circuit a practical part of your day’s plans—on foot or by bicycle.

Routes in a wider context

Stuhm lies on the international R-1 cycling route and the Gdańsk–Malbork–Toruń tourist route, and is part of the tourist “Szlak Powiśla,” which runs from Elbląg via Malbork to Kwidzyn. These are different types of routes: one international cycling route and two tourist routes. When planning your trip, you can distinguish the cycling route from the tourist-route connections.

Viewpoint and summer swimming

Jaszczurowe Wzgórze, a recreation and leisure area at Jezioro Sztumskie, has a viewpoint overlooking the town panorama. There is also a supervised bathing area at the same lake during the summer season. If you plan to swim, check the current operating rules locally before your visit.

Castle and historic urban layout

Sztum Castle is a 14th-century Teutonic castle and was the former summer residence of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. Today, it houses a branch of the Muzeum Zamkowe w Malborku. The urban layout of Sztum’s Old Town, together with the castle complex, is listed in the register of monuments of the Pomeranian Voivodeship; the entry is dated 16 July 1959. The dates refer to different things: the 14th century applies to the castle, while 1959 is the date of the monument register entry.

Culture in the wider Powiat sztumski

The wider Powiat sztumski includes two churches in Dzierzgoń with historic features. The Church of the Holy Trinity was built in the 13th century on the castle hill and preserves a tombstone dating from 1347. The Church of the Holy Spirit is part of a former Reformed monastery complex and has a fully polychromed, timber-boarded barrel-vaulted ceiling. Polychromed means decorated in multiple colours; timber-boarded describes the planking on the barrel vault. A barrel vault is a curved ceiling that extends lengthwise.
