Sztum combines lakeside trails with a clearly visible historic townscape. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus more on outdoor activities and lakes or on architecture and history. Both offer specific points of interest: you can explore Lake Sztumskie along a well-lit circular trail, while the castle, churches and surviving sections of the town fortifications reveal different chapters in the town’s history.

At Lake Sztumskie: on foot or by bike

A well-lit walking and cycling trail about 5 km long runs around Lake Sztumskie. The Jaszczurowe WzgĂłrze recreation area, with its viewpoint, is situated along the trail. A lakeside walk and a view from this viewpoint are among the options you can consider during a stay in Sztum.

There is also a separate marked trail in Sztum that follows the promenade along Lake Sztumskie. If you prefer walking by the water, you can plan to visit this promenade as a separate point of interest. The lake is also popular with kayakers and divers. These activities offer a different perspective on the lake than a walk or bike ride, and may help you decide whether to think of Sztum primarily as a destination for lakeside trails or for a range of activities around the lake.

Another lake offers a different view of the town: a walk around Lake Zajezierskie provides a panorama of Sztum from the opposite shore.

Castle, churches and town wall

Sztum Teutonic Castle dates from the 14th century. It served as the seat of a Teutonic Order bailiff and as the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order’s summer residence. These two historic functions make the castle an important point of reference for anyone interested in the history of the Teutonic Order. St. Anne’s Parish Church adds to this insight into the town’s architectural history: it was built after the Thirteen Years’ War and remodelled and enlarged around 1900–1901.

Another landmark in the town’s history is the former Protestant church. Built in 1818 on the site of the former town hall in the central part of the market square, it now houses a local history room. The town fortifications can also be traced along a specific section: 116 metres of the restored western town wall survive alongside the moat. The castle, church, local history room and surviving section of wall offer different ways to explore Sztum’s history of the Teutonic Order, its churches and the town itself.
