Churches and Architectural History

The Parish Church of the Holy Trinity was built on Castle Hill in the 13th century. Its furnishings date from after 1730. The construction and furnishings therefore point to different periods: the church building dates back to the 13th century, while its furnishings were added later. Another trace of the past leads to the Church of the Holy Spirit. It is part of the complex known as the former Reformat monastery. The first recorded information about the church dates from the 13th century. Inside, it has a boarded barrel vault that is entirely covered in polychrome decoration. This distinctive ceiling sets the church interior apart from that of the Church of the Holy Trinity, whose furnishings are said to date from after 1730.

St. Anne’s Cemetery Chapel is a Gothic building dating from the 14th century. It was an essential part of the castle complex. Its history is therefore connected to the castle site, even though it is a separate building in its own right. Castle Hill and the Townscape

Dzierzgoń Castle was one of the most important economic, logistical and political centres of medieval Europe. In the Teutonic Order’s state, it was the second most important logistical centre after Malbork Castle. Today, archaeological excavations are taking place on Castle Hill at the site of the medieval castle of a Teutonic Order commander. The castle is present both through its historic role and as an archaeological site.

The Church of St. Catherine presents a different aspect of the town: its distinctive silhouette, with a Baroque dome, is a defining feature of the townscape. A former monastery building from the 18th century now houses the Dzierzgoń Cultural Centre. The Szlak Zamków Powiśla is more than 80 kilometres long and connects sites in Malbork, Sztum, Prabuty, Przezmark and Dzierzgoń, among other places.
