Gowino can be explored through three themes: a regional cycling route, forest areas with protected nesting sites, and historical traces within the village. If you are choosing a holiday destination based on nature, activity and history, these features offer different points of reference for considering Gowino as part of your trip to Poland.

Cycling through the region

Regional Cycling Route No. 114 connects Lębork, Łęczyce, Luzino, Wejherowo and Krokowa. In the Gowino planning area, it runs along road 01 KDZ. The route therefore provides a concrete reference point for planning your cycling trip: Gowino lies along its described course, while the named places mark the wider regional context. Check the signage before setting off, as the route number and course are documented in the local plan.

Forest landscape and protected nesting sites

Gowino and Pętkowice lie on the edge of the buffer zone of the Trójmiejski Landscape Park. Rare and endangered white-tailed eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla) and black storks (Ciconia nigra) nest in the forests in the area of both villages; their nesting sites are protected. The landscape and wildlife are two complementary aspects of nature here: the landscape park provides the geographical setting, while the nesting sites point to the forests’ particular importance for these bird species.

The protected nesting sites are an important reminder to treat the breeding areas with care. Together with the cycling route, they paint a picture of regional travel alongside a protected natural environment.

Historical traces in Gowino

The village’s history can also be read in specific features. The early medieval hillfort site in Gowino has a distinctive landscape form and is listed as an archaeological monument: it bears number C-52, formerly 30/A. It was entered in the register following a decision by the Wojewódzki Konserwator Zabytków in Gdańsk dated 4 December 1968. Another listed site is the burial mound cemetery in the Gowino area, number C-72, formerly 49/A; the decision concerning it dates from 29 May 1969.

The historic village structure also includes a conservation zone for the rural settlement layout. Part of Gowino lies within this zone. The building at ul. Długa 1 retains historic and cultural features and contributes to the historic character of the development within the protected settlement fabric. Together, these features reveal different aspects of the local heritage: the early medieval fortification, the burial mound cemetery and the traditional village layout.

Culture in the wider destination of Wejherowo

For a cultural perspective beyond Gowino, Wejherowo is a separate point of reference; the following places and attractions are in Wejherowo and are not features of Gowino. Kalwaria Wejherowska was the fourth Calvary complex established during the period of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. After Bishop Mikołaj Albert Gniewosz of Aleksandrów approved its construction on 9 June 1649, work began on its chapels.

Wejherowo also offers various ways to explore Kashubian history and culture. The Muzeum Piśmiennictwa i Muzyki Kaszubsko-Pomorskiej was founded in 1968 and is a treasure trove of regional artefacts as well as a centre of Kashubian culture, particularly its language. The Książnica prof. Gerarda Labudy presents a permanent exhibition on the history of the Kashubians. Models of the town and Kalwaria Wejherowska are on display in the historic town hall.

The Szlak Nut Kaszubskich links 15 pedestals in different parts of the town, each featuring a fragment of a traditional counting rhyme, into a route that passes important sights; individual installations may change. The permanent exhibition at Muzeum Piaśnickie spans two floors. Using the Piaśnica massacre as an example, it commemorates the victims of the Pomeranian crimes; relics of the Piaśnica massacre are located in the basement. Thus, the cultural themes in Wejherowo range from Kashubian language and history to remembrance and regional heritage.
