Żywiec’s history
The Komorowski Castle, also known as the Old Castle, is the oldest non-religious masonry building in Żywiec. Since January 2005, it has housed the City Museum. Among other things, you can see a 19th-century Biedermeier salon and the study of Karol Stefan Habsburg from the interwar period. The historic rooms thus offer a glimpse of both bourgeois life and Habsburg history.
The City Museum follows a clear weekly schedule: it is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and closed on Mondays. The tower of the Co-Cathedral of Żywiec adds another chapter to the town’s architectural history: it was built in 1582–1583 and completed in 1585. These dates give the tower a distinct place in a visit to the town, without requiring a particular itinerary.
The Żywiec Brewery Museum offers another perspective on industrial history. It opened in 2006 in the brewery’s former maturing cellars to mark its 150th anniversary. The museum is part of the Silesian Route of Technical Monuments and has been an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage since 2010. After extensive revitalization, it reopened with renewed exhibitions, new themed areas and interactive features. Visitors can taste beer after their visit; check the current visitor arrangements in advance.
Parks and walking paths
Żywiec’s green spaces also tell the story of the town’s long history. The origins of Żywiec Park probably date back to the first half of the 16th century. Castle Park is home to 52 trees that have been designated natural monuments. The parks combine historic landscapes with protected trees, complementing Żywiec’s cultural attractions with a connection to nature.
Żywiec has scenic hiking trails as well as urban walking paths that pass through attractive parts of the town. Lake Żywiec lies on the northern edge of town and offers opportunities for water sports. This gives you several options for planning your day: paths through town, hikes or time focused on water sports.
An educational trail more than six kilometres long opened along the shore of Lake Żywiec in 2018 for pedestrians and cyclists. If you would like to include it in your plans, check the trail’s current condition in advance.
Mini zoo and horseback riding
The Mini Zoo at Stajnia Miejska features domestic and wild animals. Visitors can also ride horses in the exercise area. If you plan to go riding, check before your arrival to confirm that it is currently available. The Mini Zoo is also an attraction for younger visitors; animal watching and horseback riding are separate activities.
