Markets in the centre: Żareckie Jarmarki
The Żareckie Jarmarki take place every Wednesday and Saturday in the centre of Żarki. More than 500 sellers set up their stalls across a market area of 1.5 hectares. Products on offer include local produce and food, as well as fruit and vegetables. The market tradition dates back to 1556. If you enjoy browsing market stalls and looking at regional products, this is a good reason to experience Żarki on a market day. Tatarczuch is also part of the markets’ culinary offering: it is available at Jadwiga Plesińska’s stall on Wednesdays and Saturdays outside the winter season. At the regularly held Kupiecki Sąsiek in the Żarecka Stodola, visitors can also listen to folk music, try Tatarczuch and other regional specialities, and buy regional products and souvenirs. Stary Młyn: a glimpse into traditional crafts
The Stary Młyn Museum of Old Crafts is housed in an almost 100-year-old electric mill. During the exhibition visit and workshops, visitors can try their hand at small craft activities. A visit therefore combines a look at a historic mill building with practical activities. Since 1 January 2017, the Old Mill has been part of the Silesian Route of Industrial Monuments.
Advance reservations are required; guided tours start on the hour. As visiting arrangements may change, check them again before your visit. If you would like to include mill history and craft activities in your travel plans, Stary Młyn is a clearly defined destination in Żarki.
Townscape and the Jewish Cultural Trail
Żarki preserves a historic town layout centred on a trapezoidal Old Market Square. The streets Kościelna, Leśniowska, Berka Joselewicza and Piłsudskiego surround it. The Jewish Cultural Trail offers further insights into the town’s history: it connects the Old Market Square and former town centre with a memorial site, a Jewish cemetery and the former synagogue, now used as a cultural centre.
The trail starts at a car park on Koziegłowska Street and ends at the Old Market Square. It takes about an hour and a half to walk; this is an approximate time. You can explore the cultural trail independently using multimedia materials. This lets you focus your visit on the historic stops and their connections to the townscape, according to your interests.
Church and historic barns
Another testament to the town’s history is the Church of Saints Simon and Jude Thaddeus in Żarki. It was built between 1518 and 1522; its founder was Marcin Myszkowski, castellan of Wieluń. The historic barn complex is also part of the town’s architectural heritage: its buildings are constructed from white Jurassic limestone and brick. Together with the historic layout of the Old Market Square, the church and barns offer further perspectives on Żarki’s architectural history.
A hiking trail through Żarki
If you’re planning a longer walk, consider the Żarecki Trail. This yellow-marked hiking trail is 35 kilometres long and passes through Żarki. It is therefore considerably longer than the Jewish Cultural Trail, for which the walking time is given as about an hour and a half.
