Workers’ Colonies and Industrial Heritage
The Ficinus workers’ colony is one of the oldest examples of workers’ housing architecture in Upper Silesia; more than 90 percent of its residential buildings have been preserved. Ficinus includes a historic pedestrian area, a museum exhibition on traditional Silesian cuisine and a gallery featuring people associated with Ruda Śląska. This lets you combine a look at the settlement with insights into regional food culture and the city’s history.
Another workers’ colony is Carl-Emanuel: its 15 workers’ houses are located along Wolności, Raciborska and Zabrzańska streets. In Chebzie, the railway station complex that now houses Stacja Biblioteka was built between 1897 and 1899. Stacja Biblioteka is part of the Route of Industrial Monuments of the Silesian Voivodeship.
A prominent landmark of industrial history is Wielki Piec at Huta “Pokój.” The blast furnace was built between 1966 and 1968 and is almost 76 metres tall. It has been listed in the register of monuments since 2012 and has also been part of the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH) since 2020. These sites offer different perspectives: Ficinus conveys the history of housing, while Wielki Piec illustrates the scale of an industrial complex.
The Maksymilian Chrobok Municipal Museum hosts temporary exhibitions on ethnography, history and visual arts; its programme may change. St. Joseph’s Parish is also a historic point of interest: it was elevated to a diocesan sanctuary on 30 April 2010.
Green Spaces and Routes
The Rudzki Trail connects the districts of Wirek and Nowy Bytom through revitalized green spaces and parks. The project transformed degraded industrial areas into public spaces and supports travel between the districts with micromobility options. Walking, cycling and running are planned along the trail; some sections are also intended to be suitable for roller skating.
A separate nature trail is located in a five-hectare natural area between Bujoczka and Kościelna streets. In the Ruda district, a boulder of coarse-grained granite stands at the intersection of Wolności and Kościelna streets; it has been protected as a natural monument since 1960. Alongside industrial heritage, these places give your plans a concrete connection to green spaces and nature.
Leisure and Getting Around During Your Stay
Aquadrom brings together leisure, sports and sauna facilities. Its listed attractions include seven winding slides, a white-water channel, an artificial wave and several whirlpools. There is also a children’s area, four different saunas and a seven-metre-high diving tower. As individual attractions may change, it is worth checking the latest information before your visit. As a rough guide, Aquadrom is five minutes from the A4 motorway and 15 minutes from Drogowa Trasa Średnicowa.
