Sanok offers several concrete starting points for a trip that combines culture and landscape: at the Muzeum Historyczne, you can see a collection of 700 icons and other religious artworks. Trails around the city lead to churches and through varied landscapes. Regional dishes are also part of the town’s character. This makes it possible to discover Sanok from different perspectives, without having to consider the cultural and active sides of the trip separately.

Sanok’s location between two mesoregions

The San River crosses Sanok from south to north through a belt of glacially formed valleys known as Doły Jasielsko-Krośnieńsko-Sanockie. At the same time, the town lies in two mesoregions: the Sanok-Turcza Mountains and the Bukowsko Foothills. The Bukowsko Foothills are one of these two landscape units that shape Sanok’s varied topography. This geographical setting gives the destination a different character from a city break focused solely on urban sights: here, culture is accompanied by a distinctive landscape backdrop.

Icons, ceramics and church architecture

The collection at the Muzeum Historyczne includes 700 icons and other religious artworks. If you are interested in regional craft traditions, the museum also offers a practical way to explore the subject: it runs workshops based on patterns from its collection of Pokuttyan ceramics. Confirm workshop availability in advance.

Elsewhere in Sanok County, you will also encounter various forms of historic church architecture. In Dobra, a 17th-century church is part of a church complex; its tower now serves as a gate and bell tower. The former Greek Catholic Church of St. Nicholas in Dobra features figurative polychrome decoration, executed by Antoni and Michał Bogdański between 1899 and 1904. Another historic church stands in Tyrawa Solna: the wooden Greek Catholic parish church, built in 1837, is dedicated to St. John the Baptist, constructed using log-cabin techniques, and has a pole tower.

Hiking trails of varying lengths

The approximately 70-kilometre Icon Trail connects 14 churches in the area around Sanok. It therefore links a specific cultural theme with a longer route. The Sanok–Chryszczata hiking trail provides another point of reference for planning your time: it is 40 kilometres long and takes around ten hours. This duration indicates that you should allow a full day for the hike.

Another route option is the 72-kilometre Sanok–Przemyśl trail, which passes through the Słonne Mountains and the Przemyśl Foothills. The length, approximate duration and landscape therefore vary from one route to another. Compare these details when deciding which trail suits your timeframe and interest in the landscapes along the way. A cycling and driving version of a route described in Sanok County also has a recorded sequence of places: it runs from Sanok via Mrzygłód, Dobra, Łodzina, Ulucz, Tyrawa Solna, Siemuszowa, Hołuczków, Tyrawa Wołoska, Słony Wierch, Załuż and Międzybródź, then back to Sanok.

Landscapes across Sanok County

Beyond Sanok, Sanok County offers other natural attractions. Słonne Mountains Landscape Park is one of three landscape parks in the county. The Polanki Nature Reserve near Bykowce protects natural Carpathian beech forest communities. Near Duszatyn, in the municipality of Komańcza, the Zwiezło Nature Reserve protects two mountain lakes formed by a landslide on the slopes of Chryszczata. These examples show how varied the landscapes described across the wider travel area are: from a forest reserve to lakes whose origin is directly linked to a landslide.

Swimming and regional cuisine

The CRiS swimming complex in Sanok has pools that can be used year-round, seasonal outdoor pools and a rehabilitation area. If you plan a visit, check before your trip which areas are open. A culinary specialty can be found at the tavern in the Sanok Open-Air Museum: it is housed in a historic granary dating from 1732 and serves regional dishes, including wholemeal pierogi and Hryczaniki. As the description lists the tavern as an active service, it is advisable to confirm that it is currently operating before visiting.
