Open-Air Museum: Architecture and Everyday Life Through the Ages
The Ethnographic Park of the open-air museum in Sanok contains more than 150 structures. One section is devoted to the history of the oil industry. The park therefore brings together both a topic in economic history and displays of historic architecture. If you are interested in different aspects of regional history, you can take these into account when choosing what to focus on.
The section recreating the architecture of a Galician small-town market from the turn of the 20th century is particularly vivid. Wooden houses stand around a spacious market square. Their interiors depict craft workshops, an inn, a municipal office, a post office and other establishments. It is a recreation: the houses and rooms show how such a market area was laid out. This distinguishes this part of the park from a collection focused solely on individual objects.
The Ethnographic Park also includes a manor house. It comes from the village of Święcany and adds a specific building with a recorded place of origin to the different settings on display. If you are interested in rural architecture when planning your trip, you can make a note of this manor house as a separate point of interest alongside the recreated market square.
Museum Collections and Sanok Hiking Trails
Sanok Castle houses the Historical Museum, founded in 1934. Its collections include icons and works by the Polish artist Zdzisław Beksiński. This offers a different cultural perspective from the open-air museum: here, the focus is on collections in the castle, while the open-air museum features recreated market buildings and a section devoted to the oil industry. Which stop appeals to you more depends on whether you are more interested in icons and art or in architecture and historic establishments.
The blue-marked Szlak Ikon hiking trail runs from Sanok through the Historical Museum, the Orthodox Cathedral and the Museum of Folk Architecture. If you would like to include culture and hiking in your trip plans, you can follow this marked trail. Its listed stops bring together different cultural themes, while the route itself is another distinct aspect of planning a visit to Sanok.
For hikes in the surrounding area, there is also a PTTK hiking trail from Sanok Main Railway Station via the Słonne Mountains and the Przemyśl Foothills to Przemyśl. Near Sanok, this trail provides access to Orli Kamień. Another PTTK connecting trail runs from the main railway station to the red hiking trail at Orli Kamień. Together with the section of the red trail from Orli Kamień to Sanok-Biała Góra, it forms a hiking route.
If you are looking for accommodation in Sanok, you can first consider how important the cultural stops and hiking trails are to your stay. When choosing between a hotel, holiday apartment and holiday home, your personal preferences regarding service, independence and space matter.
