Church and cultural history

The present-day church in Dubeninki was built in 1903. This year of construction anchors the local history to a specific date. A later cultural landmark is the Galeria Rękodzieła i Sztuki Ludowej, which opened in 2004 in the attic of the Gminne Centrum Kultury. The two are clearly distinct: the building history of a church on the one hand, and a gallery whose name refers to handicrafts and folk art on the other. For your thematic overview, these include both a religious building and a cultural institution associated with the locality. The dates mark different centuries.

Puszcza Romincka: forests, marshes and protected areas

The Puszcza Romincka Landscape Park lies within the municipality and was established on 14 January 1998. It covers 14,865.11 hectares and lies within the municipalities of Gołdap and Dubeninki. It includes the southern part of Puszcza Romincka and adjacent open areas; the northern part of the forest lies on the Russian side. More than 70 percent of the landscape park is occupied by Puszcza Romincka, known as the “Polish Taiga.” Marshes and swamp forests shape the area, including boreal spruce forest on peat. There are eight nature reserves in the park, two of them in the buffer zone; the park area is also designated as a Natura 2000 habitat site. Forest and marsh landscapes, along with protected areas, are therefore central to the natural themes at the municipal level.

A long-distance hiking trail in the wider region

In the wider region, the green hiking trail is a section of the international E-11 long-distance trail. It runs from the eastern shore of Lake Gołdapiwo near Kruklanki to Stańczyki on the edge of Puszcza Romincka. It first passes through the northern part of Puszcza Borecka, over Garb Szeski and through the Obniżenie Gołdapy to the western edge of Puszcza Romincka. The trail thus passes through several named landscapes before reaching the western edge of Puszcza Romincka. The perspectives also differ for trip planning: the park focuses on a large natural area and information about protected areas, while the hiking trail focuses on a route with named starting and ending points. This lets you weigh the natural landscape and the route as two different ways of exploring the region.
