Janowo: Nature and Culture of the Municipality of Susz

A 6.5 km municipal road runs between Janowo, Bornice and Lubnowy Wielkie. This connection provides a clear geographical reference to the three places. Further afield in the Municipality of Susz, historic buildings and natural landscapes add to the picture: cultural attractions are found in several named villages, while forests, lakes and protected areas form the broader landscape setting.

Culture in the Municipality of Susz

In the village of Bałoszyce stands a Baroque palace dating from the 17th century. It was later remodelled in the Neo-Gothic style by Karl Otto Magnus von Brünneck, following a design by architect Luis Runge; a spacious park surrounds the estate. The sequence from Baroque origins to Neo-Gothic remodelling makes the building’s history particularly interesting: two distinct historical periods can be traced in a single building. Also in Bałoszyce is the Church of the Holy Family, dating from the 17th century. Thus, in the same village, a palace with a park and a religious building from the same century provide distinct architectural points of interest.

The restored palace in Bałoszyce is described as a hotel and restaurant and is associated with biological regeneration services and a horse-breeding facility. Before your trip, check whether these uses are still in place.

The manor houses in Babięta Wielkie and Nipkowo are each considered historically attractive places. The palace ruins in Januszewo are regarded in the same way. Lubnowy Małe is home to both a manor house park and a roadside cross. Both were added to the register of historic monuments on 27 September 2017 under reference number Z-69/2017. These two sites add further specific local points of interest to the municipality’s historic buildings.

Natural Landscape and Protected Areas

The area of the Municipality of Susz lies within the Pojezierza Iławskiego Landscape Park and is also part of the European Natura 2000 ecological network. The Jezioro Gaudy and Jezioro Czerwica nature reserves are located in the municipality; a landscape protection area also runs along the Liwa River. The specific names of the lakes and river add further points of reference to the broader designations of the landscape park and Natura 2000.

The Municipality of Susz lies in the Pojezierze Iławskie, a region characterised by extensive dense forests and numerous lakes rich in fish. The region’s natural landscape also includes nests of white-tailed eagles, ospreys, lesser spotted eagles, black kites, red kites and black storks. Rare and endangered plants, as well as numerous animal species—many of them protected—are found in the municipality.
