Choszczno brings together Klukom Lake in the city center, surviving traces of medieval fortifications, and a monument to Polish cycling. When planning your visit, you can choose different focuses: a longer route by the lake, views of historic buildings, or a route from Choszczno to Recz. The wider Choszczeński destination also offers additional cultural and outdoor activities.

Exploring Klukom Lake

A promenade more than six kilometers long runs around Klukom Lake in the center of Choszczno. It is also suitable for cycling. The route length is a useful measure when planning a trip; the route around the lake differs significantly from a connection between two towns.

Kayaks, pedal boats, and rowboats are available for hire at Plaża Miejska. The rental service is seasonal. If you plan to use it, check before your trip whether it is operating during your visit. This keeps boat rental as a separate activity alongside the promenade, rather than treating the two as the same offer.

The Green Route is 16.7 kilometers long and runs from Choszczno to Recz. Unlike the promenade around the lake, it follows a route between two named places. Check the current route markings before setting out. This makes it easy to distinguish the two routes by their direction: one around Klukom Lake, the other from Choszczno toward Recz.

City Walls, Park, and Cycling History

Remains of medieval city walls with shell towers and an outer gate tower of the Stone Gate survive in Choszczno. They still shape the cityscape and mark the boundary of the historic center. The wall remains are therefore not just individual historic structures, but also a reference point for understanding the layout of the center. The different tower forms make the fortifications’ character clear.

The Aleja Gwiazd Kolarstwa Polskiego was unveiled in 2002. Its stylized wall displays handprints of well-known Polish cyclists. This public monument connects a specific place in Choszczno with the history of Polish cycling; it adds a different theme and form of remembrance to the city wall remains.

Park Moniuszki is also located in the center. It covers just over two hectares and was laid out as an urban landscape park in the 1840s. Its size and date of origin give the park its own historical context within the cityscape. Together with the lake and the fortification remains, it shows how different places in Choszczno reveal different aspects of the city’s history and outdoor experience.

Further perspectives in the wider Choszczeński destination

As an additional point of interest, the Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Choszczno is part of the wider Choszczeński destination. The Knights Hospitaller built the church in the 14th century. Inside are a ceramic relief of the Tree of Jesse depicting the genealogy of Christ and a 15th-century epitaph for Mayor Mikołaj Rebentisch. The building’s history, relief, and epitaph offer different historical and art-historical points of interest.

The Muzeum Ziemi Choszczeńskiej is also part of the wider Choszczeński destination. Its collection comprises several hundred movable artifacts dating from the Stone Age to the present; the current display may change. Visits are possible only after an appointment has been confirmed in advance. If you plan to include the museum in your itinerary, confirm your appointment before visiting.

Cycling routes in the wider Choszczeński destination also vary in scale. The main tourist cycling route of the Choszczno municipality, “Rowerem po Ziemi Choszczeńskiej,” is 83 kilometers long. The Trasa Pojezierzy Zachodnich runs for 20 kilometers from the municipality’s southern boundary to its northern boundary and forms part of a 420-kilometer route from the border with the Federal Republic of Germany to Biały Bór. These details place the routes in a broader context without equating them with the promenade by Klukom Lake.
