Dominikowo: Lake, Church and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Dominikowo
Dominikowo combines a lakeside landscape and hiking trails with a Romanesque fieldstone church. The area can be explored through two specific themes: the valley along the water and the construction and furnishing history of the Church of the Assumption of Mary.
Lake and Landscape
Dominikowo lies in a picturesque valley beside the 78-hectare Lake Dominikowo Duże. The lake is also called Dominikowo or Dominikowskie and is 17 metres deep. The Słopica flows through it; at this point, the river is only a small stream. Thus, a large body of water and a watercourse with the character of a stream share the same landscape. The lake water is described as clean and clear.
Except for a short stretch near the village, the lake is surrounded by forests. The forests therefore define most of the shoreline; a short stretch near the village is the exception.
Shoreline and Hiking Trails
A beach lies beside Dominikowo on the western shore. North of the built-up area are a bathing area and a campsite. A hiking trail reaches the campsite at kilometre 11.1. In summer, the beach is often visited by residents of Drawno, people from the surrounding area and tourists. If you include the beach in your travel plans, you can take this seasonal aspect into account.
The blue P8 hiking trail runs along the northern shore of the lake and leads from Nowa Korytnica to Drawno. This identifies both its route by the water and its two endpoints. A hiking trail follows the valley past the wooded Dominikowo lakes and offers views of the lakes.
At Lake Dominikowo, a path first climbs a high, steep slope and then descends to a trail right beside the lake. The change in elevation is a specific feature of this route: the climb is followed by a descent to the shore. This section can therefore be characterised not only by its position beside the water, but also by the described transition between slope and shore.
Church of the Assumption of Mary
The church in Dominikowo is a Romanesque fieldstone church dating from the early 14th century and dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. It was remodelled in the 17th century. Its Romanesque construction and later remodelling thus represent two distinct periods in the church’s history.
Its architectural features include a half-timbered porch and a freestanding square bell tower. Fieldstone masonry, half-timbering and the separate tower create distinct architectural accents. Together with its Romanesque classification and the 17th-century remodelling, these features make for an architectural description that encompasses several building phases.
The church has valuable Mannerist furnishings from the early 17th century. The main altar dates from 1610 and is decorated with reliefs. The general dating of the furnishings and the specific year of the altar complement one another: they place the church furnishings in a particular period while also identifying a specific point in time.
