Ińsko (Insko) combines a landscape shaped by the Ice Age with a remarkable film tradition and an exhibition on the history of the narrow-gauge railway. The town is located in Iński Landscape Park. Lakes, forests and Ice Age landforms
Iński Landscape Park is characterized by clear lakes, ravines, boulder fields and numerous forests. Lake Ińsko borders the town to the south and bears its name. It has three islands. One of them is Wyspa Sołtyski, a 20-hectare nature reserve with an old beech and oak forest whose trees are more than 150 years old.
Another example of the area’s Ice Age heritage is the boulder nature reserve, around 2 km from Ińsko. It stretches about 500 m east from the lake shore. A shoreline path runs over the hill covered with boulders, opposite Sołtyski Island.
Nearby Wzgórze Zamczysko also brings landscape and history together: a Slavic hillfort stands above Lake Zamczysko. From the wooded hill, there are views of the lake, Ińsko and Lake Piesna. The two places described therefore have different emphases: the boulder nature reserve focuses on Ice Age rock formations and the shoreline path, while Zamczysko Hill features the hillfort and views across several named destinations.
Film tradition in Ińsko
Ińskie Lato Filmowe takes place in Ińsko, within Iński Landscape Park, and is one of Poland’s oldest regularly held film events. The first edition was held in the first half of August 1973.
The regular program includes screenings of new Polish films, accompanied by meetings with filmmakers. In addition to cinema, there are events usually connected with art and nature themes.
A glimpse into railway history
Ińska Izba Pamięci is located at 3 Kolejowa Street, in the building of the former narrow-gauge railway station. Its permanent exhibition is devoted to the 101-year history of the Szadzka Commuter Railway (Saatziger Kleinbahn AG). Railway lamps, cardboard tickets, timetables and maps of the rail network show different aspects of the railway’s former operations. The collection also includes factory plates from railway cars, as well as railway workers’ uniforms and caps.
The collection brings transport history to life through specific objects and documents; the former station is also part of the town’s history. Visitors to Ińska Izba Pamięci are asked to make contact by phone in advance. The museum visit thus offers a different cultural focus from the film festival: here, the emphasis is on a permanent exhibition and historical railway objects, while the festival features film screenings and meetings with filmmakers.
