City history in the museum and historic houses
The permanent exhibition at the Hieronim Ławniczak Regional Museum features more than 1,300 objects. Its themes range from archaeology and local folk culture to regional art. Several times a year, the museum holds temporary exhibitions on historical, artistic, natural-history and regional themes. The museum’s collection therefore covers the region’s history, art and natural history.
Two buildings also reveal different chapters in the town’s history. The town hall was built around 1689 to replace an earlier wooden building. Krotoszanka, the oldest surviving house in Krotoszyn, is a wooden arcaded house dating from the second half of the 18th century. The comparison reveals a difference in their architectural histories: the town hall’s wooden predecessor was replaced, while Krotoszanka itself has survived as a wooden house.
Hiking and cycling trails, nature in Powiat Krotoszyński
The red “Krotoszyn–Baszków” hiking trail connects the two places over 15.3 kilometres. For cycling, there is the 44.1-kilometre black “Wokół Krotoszyna” route and the 39.3-kilometre green “Krotoszyńskie Dąbrowy” route. At 39.3 kilometres, the green cycling route is 4.8 kilometres shorter than the black one. The different route lengths therefore provide a practical guide for choosing a tour.
In the wider travel area, the 4.3-kilometre “Ekologiczna ścieżka przyrodnicza” nature trail passes through the “Mszar Bogdaniec” peat bog nature reserve and the “Baszków” floristic nature reserve; six educational stations are located along the route. Mszar Bogdaniec protects peat bogs and part of a forest with swamp and bog vegetation. Baszków preserves a stand of royal fern. The reserves therefore have different focuses: bog and swamp habitats in one, and a protected fern stand in the other.
The “Miejski Bór” floristic nature reserve is located in the municipality of Krotoszyn, right by the town of Krotoszyn. It is home to two protected plant species: European honeysuckle and ivy. The “Dąbrowy Krotoszyńskie Baszków–Rochy” protected landscape area is also part of the region’s natural profile: it is protected under Natura 2000 and lies partly within Powiat Krotoszyński.
Park, swimming pools and regional cuisine
The “Wojska Polskiego” landscape park in Krotoszyn dates from the first half of the 19th century and has two ponds with fountains. Here, a distinctive park landscape complements the historic architecture. Swimming facilities differ between the indoor and outdoor pools: the indoor pool at the “WODNIK” Sports and Recreation Centre has two pools and an indoor slide more than 50 metres long. The Krotoszyn outdoor swimming pool has a 50 × 25-metre swimming pool, a children’s pool and a paddling pool for toddlers.
Powiat Krotoszyński has its own annual event celebrating regional cuisine: the county is the main organiser of the “Powiat od kuchni” culinary festival, where local specialities are served.
