Wooden Town Hall and Regional Museum
Sulmierzyce Town Hall dates from 1743. It is built of wood and is considered the only building of its kind in Europe. Arcades surround the building on three sides, supported by oak posts. Its construction makes the town hall a tangible starting point if you are interested in historic architecture.
The Muzeum Regionalne Ziemi Sulmierzyckiej im. Sebastiana Fabiana Klonowicza is also housed in the historic wooden town hall. The museum was founded in 1957. Two aspects therefore come together in one place: the town hall as an 18th-century building and the history of a regional cultural institution that has existed since the mid-20th century. You can make this connection a focus of your plans without treating the architecture and the museum’s history as a single subject.
Windmill and Church History
The “Jakub” windmill was built in 1795. It stands on the northern outskirts of Sulmierzyce, on the road to Chwaliszew, at the intersection of Poznańska and Ceglarska streets. The mill brings together traditional equipment and the subject of milling as a craft. This focus on craftsmanship complements the town hall’s architectural history with a different perspective on historic buildings.
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Najświętszego Serca Pana Jezusa) is also among the town’s religious and community landmarks. Today, it serves the Roman Catholic parish and is used for funeral ceremonies before burial. This present-day function distinguishes it from the town hall, museum and mill: the church is not just a historic building, but also plays a role in the life of the community today.
Walking and Cycling Routes
The yellow walking trail connects Sulmierzyce and Krotoszyn over 17.6 kilometres and runs mostly through forest. Its length and character give you two specific points to consider when choosing a walking route for your plans. Grodzisko Sulimira is also located near Sulmierzyce, on the walking trail to Krotoszyn. The trail therefore passes a site associated with the early Middle Ages.
Another route is for cyclists: a 36-kilometre cycling route runs through Sulmierzyce. Compared with the yellow walking trail, both the activity and the stated distance are different.
Putting the Town’s History and Surroundings into Context
A narrow-gauge railway is part of the area’s transport history; its terminus was in Sulmierzyce from 1895 to 1991. At its peak, it connected Sulmierzyce with Breslau (Wrocław).
In an old oak forest beside the connecting road, halfway between Sulmierzyce and Krotoszyn, lies a Bronze Age II burial mound field. It complements the early medieval site along the walking trail with a much older historical reference.
