Brzoza offers a strong historical focus for trip planning: the memory of the battles of the Greater Poland Uprising of 1919 is encountered at several memorials and in the history of the parish church. There is also a neo-Baroque place of worship with a carved Crucifixion group, as well as a walking and cycling path and a named hiking trail. This allows you to include history, sacred art and outdoor activity as distinct points of interest along the routes described.

Remembering the Greater Poland Uprising

A mausoleum was built on Kozak Hill in Brzoza in 1923 in memory of twelve insurgents who lost their lives in the battle there on January 20, 1919. The mausoleum was destroyed in 1940. A simple monument was erected in 1969; on January 15, 2012, a replica of the pre-war mausoleum was unveiled. This sequence clearly distinguishes the original building, the later monument and the reconstruction as separate, dated phases. It connects the memory of the battle with the history of the memorial site over the following decades.

An annual memorial day is another part of this history: Every year on January 21, the residents of the Brzoza sołectwo commemorate the Greater Poland insurgents who fought against the Prussian occupying forces in 1919. Another memorial was placed in 1957 on the wall of the kindergarten building at 21 Łabiszyńska Street. The plaque commemorates insurgents who fell in fighting near the village. It is made of artificial stone and decorated with an insurgent cross and the inscription “Glory to them.” The memorial day and the plaque add a recurring occasion and another tangible memorial to the history of the mausoleum.

The parish church: architecture and history

Brzoza’s parish church is built in the Neo-Baroque style and stands at a site where battles took place during the Greater Poland Uprising of 1919. The main altar contains a carved wooden Crucifixion group by Kłobucki of Bydgoszcz. On May 15, 1938, the church was consecrated by August Hlond, Primate of Poland. Its architecture, furnishings and consecration offer different ways to understand the building. At the same time, its location connects the church’s history with the events of 1919. The Crucifixion group is a specific example of sacred art in the main altar; the consecration marks a later chapter in the church’s history.

Getting around on foot and by bike

Two distinct route profiles can be compared when choosing a route. The six-kilometer walking and cycling path runs along National Road 25 between Brzoza and Nowa Wieś Wielka. The road authority announced its completion in April 2024. The longer Blessed Czesław Jóźwiak hiking trail is 16.9 kilometers long and connects Brzoza, Łażyn and Nowa Wieś Wielka. The routes therefore differ in length, type and the places mentioned: the walking and cycling path covers the stretch between two places, while the hiking route also includes Łażyn. You can compare these features when planning; check current trail conditions and accessibility before setting out on a specific trip.
