For a trip to Schwetz (Świecie), two main themes stand out: architectural and cultural history in the town, and an additional water-based option nearby. The castle, mural and regional cultural institution offer different perspectives on culture; the recreational area at Lake Deczno adds a different dimension. Your plans therefore depend on whether you want to focus your stay mainly on architecture and culture or also include swimming and water sports.

The Gothic Świecie Castle

The Gothic Świecie Castle was built between 1335 and 1350 at the junction of the Wda and Vistula rivers. Its construction period and location provide two clear points of reference: when it was built and its position between the rivers. There is also a specific architectural feature: a long, clockwise-spiralling staircase leads to the top of the castle tower. It adds the form of a building element and its destination within the tower to the castle’s historical context. Those interested in architectural history can understand the castle through its style, period, location and a distinctive element of its design.

An annual event in the castle courtyard

The Dzień Bałabuna, also known as Święto Kociewskiego Ziemniaka, takes place every year in the second week of September in the courtyard of Świecie Castle. The event offers a different point of reference in time from the years when the castle was built: it may be relevant when choosing your travel dates, while the castle itself remains a cultural attraction in Schwetz regardless. If the event is important to your plans, check the programme for the year in question. The second week of September is the specific time to bear in mind.

Architecture in the mural and cultural work

Dominika Dziedzina’s mural “Świecie – Historia w obrazkach” depicts architectural landmarks of Świecie, both existing and lost. What remains and what has disappeared are brought together in its portrayal of the city’s architecture. This sets it apart from the castle as a single building: the mural draws attention to multiple landmarks and to how a city’s built environment changes over time. For travellers interested in architectural history, it offers a distinct cultural focus.

The Izba Regionalna Ziemi Świeckiej adds an institutional perspective to these themes. It collects, documents and preserves cultural material, making it available for research, educational and outreach purposes. Its remit therefore covers both preservation and access to cultural content. Together, the castle, mural and institution show the cultural side of Schwetz in different forms: historic architecture, depictions of the city’s landmarks and work with cultural material.

Activities at Lake Deczno

The recreational area at Lake Deczno is 3 km from Świecie. Its facilities include a supervised swimming area, water sports equipment rentals and a café. Alongside the cultural attractions, this gives you the option of focusing on swimming and water sports. Check the current seasonal availability of the facilities before visiting. This will help you plan your stay around whether you are mainly interested in Schwetz’s castle and cultural attractions or would also like to spend time at the lake.
