If you are looking for a hotel in Berent (Kościerzyna), exploring the attractions of the surrounding Gmina Kościerzyna can also help with your planning. The experiences described here are at the municipality level: lakes, educational trails, cultural sites and water activities.

Lakes and waterways

The Gmina Kościerzyna has more than 60 lakes and 80 kilometres of waterways for canoeing. Part of the municipality lies within Wdzydzki Landscape Park, with its group of ribbon lakes. Lake Wdzydze, also known as the “Kashubian Sea,” covers an area of 1,430 hectares together with its arms, Radolne, Jeleń and Gołuń. This means your travel planning can take in both the municipality’s many lakes and waterways and one particularly extensive lake system.

Compare nature trails by length and number of stops

Three educational trails offer specific points of comparison: The nature trail in Wdzydze is 4 kilometres long and has eight stops. In Juszki, a 5-kilometre circular nature and education trail has five information boards. The “Trail of Five Lakes” nature trail in Wąglikowice is 6 kilometres long and has five stops. The trail in Wdzydze is therefore the shortest of the three and also has the most stops, while the trail in Wąglikowice is the longest. At the Tourist Services Centre in Wdzydze, you can get maps showing cycling and hiking routes, as well as suggestions for excursions. The regional Kaszubski, Kamiennych Kręgów and Wdzydzki trails also pass through the Gmina.

Regional architecture in Wdzydze

The Muzeum – Kaszubski Park Etnograficzny im. Teodory i Izydora Gulgowskich in Wdzydze is Poland’s oldest open-air museum. It covers 22 hectares on the shore of Lake Gołuń. More than 50 examples of regional architecture from Kashubia, Kociewie and the Tuchola Forests illustrate rural building styles from the 17th to the 20th century. The three regions of origin and the broad time span give visitors a wide-ranging view of regional architecture. The cultural programme includes concerts on a Baroque cabinet organ made in 1765 by Gdańsk organ builder Gottfried Weinert. Regional folk ensembles also perform there quite often. The Jarmark Wdzydzki is a recurring event at the open-air museum; it is listed as taking place on the third weekend in July. If you are planning your trip around it, check the event dates for your chosen year.

Porcelain, canoeing and an island cruise

By prior arrangement, the Zakłady Porcelany Stołowej “Lubiana S.A.” offers tours of the porcelain factory year-round, Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and noon. A guide accompanies visitors through the entire production process, from design to decoration. Arrange your visit in advance and confirm it before you travel.

There are also different ways to explore the water. The Wda, Pilica, Wierzyca and Trzebiocha rivers form canoe routes in the Gmina. The Borowa–Pilica–Graniczna–Trzebiocha–Wda water route starts at “Kajaki Młyn” in Korne. The operator provides watercraft and instruction, and offers visits to the old mill. On the Wdzydze lakes, the Stolem makes a roughly one-hour circuit of Ostrów Wielki, the largest island in the lake. The Stanica Wodna PTTK in Wdzydze also has a watersports equipment rental service.

Art and further discoveries

At the Józef Ciężki “Odyseja” Art Gallery, you can view and buy paintings, graphic works, sculptures and artistic furniture by Józef Ciężki. If a particular work is central to your visit, check in advance what is currently on display or available to buy. Together with the open-air museum, educational trails and water activities, this offers a choice of different highlights to consider when planning a trip to the Gmina Kościerzyna.
