Piece
Accommodation in Piece
Piece lies on National Road 22, about two kilometres west of the village of Kaliska. Its location by the road is a clear reference point for arriving by car; the Izydora Gulgowski Trail also passes through the village. Piece brings together tangible architectural history and a clearly traceable route: a thatched Kociewie cottage, the parish Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and other historic features shape the village’s cultural character.
A thatched Kociewie house
At the corner of ul. Okrężna and ul. 6 Marca stands the listed wooden Kociewie house at ul. 6 Marca 14. It dates from the 19th century and is entered in the Pomeranian Voivodeship’s heritage register under number 875. The thatched Kociewie cottage in Piece is dated to 1885. These details give the house a specific place in the village’s history, rather than treating it as just one of many historic buildings.
For travellers interested in traditional timber construction, the house is a distinctive point of interest in the village. The street intersection is also an easy reference point: this is where ul. Okrężna and ul. 6 Marca meet. The historic building and its exact location can thus be considered together, while its entry in the heritage register states the house’s protected status.
The parish church and its history
The parish Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was built between 1911 and 1914. Construction on Czubnica Hill began on 16 July 1911. The church was designed in the Neo-Baroque style by Franz Kunst, who also supervised the construction; the work was completed in 1914. Its original furnishings included a thirteen-stop Walcker organ. A distinctive tower is also part of the church’s appearance.
The parish church is part of a protected ecclesiastical complex that also includes the rectory at ul. Kościelna 3. The complex is entered in the Pomeranian Voivodeship’s heritage register under number 1909. The Catholic cemetery between ul. Kościelna and ul. Zielona is also listed under number 1909. The parish was established later than the church was built: it was founded on 16 December 1922 by the then Bishop of Chełmno, Augustyn Rosentreter.
The Izydora Gulgowski Trail through Piece
In 1997, the Izydora Gulgowski Trail was rerouted so that it ran directly from Kaliska to Piece and then on to the Gulgowski House in Iwiczno. In the Piece area, it follows ul. Działkowa to National Road 22, then continues along unpaved ul. Okrężna, ul. 6 Marca and ul. Szkolna towards Iwiczno. This sequence of streets makes the connection between the named places and the historic village centre clear, without implying a specific walking or driving time.
The listed wooden house stands at the junction of Okrężna and 6 Marca; there is also a chapel dedicated to St John of Nepomuk on ul. 6 Marca, at kilometre 2.5. Those following the route will find two named reference points within Piece. Kaliska marks the starting point of the route as it was rerouted in 1997, and Iwiczno its next destination.
Choose the right accommodation in Piece
If you are planning a culturally focused trip, you can begin your accommodation search by deciding whether you want to focus mainly on architectural history, the wooden house or the route of the Izydora Gulgowski Trail. For accommodation, a hotel, holiday apartment or holiday home may suit you, depending on your priorities. Service, independence, space and the ability to prepare your own meals are different factors to consider; the historical information about Piece does not describe the amenities of individual places to stay.
