Castle Hill, Market Square and the Canal in Cieszyn

A park was laid out on Castle Hill in Cieszyn. Within the park are the Piast Tower and the Rotunda of St. Nicholas. This brings together a park and two named buildings in one place. The Market Square offers a different historical perspective, with its town hall and Renaissance arcaded houses giving it its distinctive character. The Market Square has been in its current location since the end of the 15th century. The town hall and Renaissance arcaded houses dating from the 16th century are located there. The houses once belonged to the wealthiest residents. The square and arcaded houses thus point to two different historical dates and contexts: the Market Square’s location since the late 15th century and the construction of the houses in the following century. Cieszyńska Wenecja is a low-rise urban area along the Młynówka Canal. Since the Middle Ages, the canal has powered mill wheels and supplied water to workshops. Here, the focus is both on the present-day townscape and on the canal’s specific historical function.

Culture in the broader destination of Teschen

In the broader destination of Teschen, the Muzeum Śląska Cieszyńskiego is a landmark in the history of museums: the Rev. Leopold Jan Szersznik founded it in 1802. It is one of the oldest public museums in Central Europe and the oldest public museum in Poland. The permanent exhibition “At the Border of History and Cultures” focuses primarily on the history and culture of the nobility, bourgeoisie and rural population of Cieszyn Silesia. Its scope therefore covers different social groups and the region’s cultural history.

The Książnica Cieszyńska is another cultural attraction in the broader destination of Teschen. It holds more than 130,000 printed volumes, including around 18,500 early printed books and 17,000 manuscripts. It is housed in the so-called Bludowski House. The building was created in the 18th century by converting a former ducal mint dating from the 13th century. The collection includes printed works and manuscripts, while the building’s history recalls the former mint.

Zamek Cieszyn adds a different focus: the institution is a centre for entrepreneurship and design in a Neoclassical hunting lodge built by the Habsburgs. The Muzeum Drukarstwa commemorates the printing traditions of Cieszyn Silesia and preserves unique collections as well as machines that are still operational. Together, these institutions offer different insights into design, entrepreneurship and the history of printing.

The Izba Tradycji in Cieszyn highlights the Cieszynka hunting rifle. Its production began in the second half of the 16th century. Another part of the region’s heritage is the Arcyksiążęcy Browar Zamkowy Cieszyn: it has operated continuously since 1846 and brews beer using traditional methods. Alongside museum collections, visitors can therefore explore craftsmanship and brewing traditions as distinct topics.

Routes to help you find your way

The Szlak Kociej Szajki leads to Castle Hill, the Market Square and Cieszyńska Wenecja. The route takes you to three places with different focal points: the buildings on Castle Hill, the history of the square and the canal area.

Another route runs along the revitalised banks of the Olza by the Open Air Museum; a combined pedestrian and cycle path follows this stretch. The tour of the Open Air Museum Cieszyn–Český Těšín begins on the Polish side at the Hala Widowiskowo-Sportowa, runs along Aleja Piastowska over the Friendship Bridge and continues along the Czech bank. The described route therefore leads from its starting point in Poland across the bridge to the Czech side of the river.
