Culture and history

The religious and artistic history of the place includes Golgota Jasnogórska, a cycle of 18 paintings by Częstochowa artist Jerzy Duda-Gracz. He created it in 2000 for the millennium anniversary for the sanctuary; the works are located on the upper floor of the Chapel of the Mother of God. Fourteen paintings depict the Stations of the Cross; the others address the Resurrection of Jesus, the encounter with Doubting Thomas, the sending out of the Apostles and the Ascension.

Opened in 1982, the Muzeum 600-lecia Jasnej Góry presents the cultural and artistic work of the Pauline monks who care for this site. The Arsenał presents the exhibition “Arsenal of European Art. Painting – Sculpture – Votive Offerings”, featuring known and unknown works of art from the Jasna Góra monastery dating from the 15th to the 20th century.

The Muzeum Częstochowskie presents permanent and temporary exhibitions in eight locations. The Second Museum of Zdzisław Beksiński preserves paintings and drawings by Zdzisław Beksiński, an exceptional and globally renowned artist of modern Polish art.

In the Częstochowa district of Raków, the Archaeological Reserve’s permanent exhibition “From the Darkness of History” presents 85 excavated burial sites of the Lusatian culture dating from 750 to 550 BC, with pottery vessels, tools, jewellery and weapons preserved at the site. According to the city’s account, the reserve is considered unique worldwide. The Muzeum Górnictwa Rud Żelaza presents the history of iron ore mining and historical extraction methods in the Częstochowa region in a permanent underground exhibition; the exhibition is a faithful reconstruction of a mine. The museum is included in the Silesian Route of Industrial Monuments.

Getting around

Public transport in Częstochowa includes buses and trams. The city also has cycling infrastructure that is growing year by year, with additional cycle paths.

Leisure and routes

The Bastion św. Trójcy serves as a viewpoint during walks along the walls of Jasna Góra. Holy Virgin Mary Avenue is the main axis of Częstochowa. It was designed by Jan Bernhard and built in 1818, connecting Old Częstochowa and New Częstochowa and leading from St. Sigismund’s Church to the parks below the Jasna Góra monastery.

In the west of Częstochowa, Lisiniec Leisure Park has more than 40 hectares of green space, three bodies of water named after seas and oceans, and around 2.5 kilometres of leisure paths. Pedal boats, kayaks and SUP boards are available for hire there. The leisure park also includes a skate park, two tennis courts and a high ropes course.
