In Wyry, local history, remembrance and architectural evidence come together. A manor complex, stone monuments and a historical themed trail offer different ways to explore the past. There is also a historic church in nearby Gostyń, as well as a natural monument within the municipality of Wyry. If you choose a destination based on its cultural themes, you can distinguish between architectural history, places of remembrance and the connection to Polish defence in September 1939.

Manor Complex and Remembrance

The manor complex in Wyry dates from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. It consists of residential buildings, farm buildings and a fragment of a wall. The different elements make the complex tangible as an ensemble; its dating to the threshold between two centuries marks a distinct period in local history.

An obelisk in Wyry commemorates those murdered during the Second World War. Its function is clearly distinct from that of the manor complex: here the focus is on remembrance, not the architectural composition of a manor. Thus, architectural history and remembrance of the murdered are separate, distinct themes of the place.

Stone Monuments on Główna Street

Two stone monuments add to the picture on Główna Street. A wayside cross dates from 1860 and was donated by the municipality of Wyry. Also on this street is a stone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from the 19th century. The cross is dated to a specific year, while the statue is assigned to a century; in addition, the donation links the cross to the municipality of Wyry.

Themed Trail on the History of 1939

A historical themed trail is devoted to the Polish defence in September 1939. It runs through the main part of Wyry, including along Wagonowa and Leszczynowa streets. Unlike a single monument, the trail runs through the village, placing a distinct emphasis on the history of the defence.

A local report announced the trail as available in August 2026 and described the app developed for it, with location-based additional content and challenges in Polish, English and German. If you would like to include the trail in your plans, check its current availability in advance. The trail places a different emphasis from the obelisk: it covers the Polish defence, while the monument is dedicated to those murdered during the war.

Historical Traces in the Surrounding Area

The “Sowiniec” bunker is also part of the historical context in the immediate vicinity of the destination. It did not take part in the fighting in the first days of September 1939 and is considered a silent witness to the history that unfolded there.

In nearby Gostyń, there is a historic church dating from 1922, which now serves as a cemetery chapel. In addition to its year of construction, its current function is another feature that distinguishes it from the stone monuments in Wyry.

Natural Monument in the Municipality of Wyry

Near Stary Staw, in the municipality of Wyry, is the municipality’s only designated natural monument: a pedunculate oak with a trunk circumference of 550 cm, measured at breast height. The tree adds a connection to nature to the historical themes. The measurement refers to the trunk circumference at the stated measuring height, not the height of the tree.
