Old Town and Architecture
Mikołów has a well-preserved Old Town with a market square and streets leading off it. Tenement houses from the 18th and 19th centuries surround the square; the present-day town hall building dates from 1872. Together, these features give the Old Town a distinctive architectural character.
The Basilica of St. Wojciech in Mikołów is a Neo-Romanesque church built between 1843 and 1861. Its interior is also designed in the Neo-Romanesque style. Features include the main altar of St. Wojciech and side altars dedicated to Our Lady of Mikołów and the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Another church building stands in Paniowy, now part of Mikołów: the 18th-century wooden Church of Saints Peter and Paul, with three Baroque domes. It is on the Silesian Wooden Architecture Trail. The comparison shows two distinct architectural styles: a 19th-century Neo-Romanesque basilica and an 18th-century wooden building with Baroque domes.
The Szlak Krawędziowy GOP runs through Mikołów’s market square and continues past the old church building and the Basilica of the Parish of St. Wojciech. It is 78 km long.
Museum and Event Dates
The museum in Mikołów hosts exhibitions, meetings, lectures, historical walks and workshops. Its focus is on local history and the history of Upper Silesia, connecting local topics with the history of the region.
The Mikołowskie Jarmarki Staroci (Mikołów Antique Markets) take place in the market square on the first Sunday of every month. Another musical tradition is the international Mikołowskie Dni Muzyki festival, held in Mikołów since 1991. The 35th edition is scheduled for spring 2027. Parks and Nature
Planty Park covers approximately 13 hectares. It has playgrounds, a pond and the Parkhaus. Planty was entered in the register of historic monuments of the Silesian Voivodeship in 2001.
The Śląski Ogród Botaniczny (Silesian Botanical Garden) is based in the Sołectwo Mokre, at the Centrum Edukacji Przyrodniczej i Ekologicznej on Sośnia Góra. It covers more than 100 hectares, including Sośnia Góra and part of Fiołkowa Góra. These figures indicate different scales: approximately 13 hectares for Planty and more than 100 hectares for the botanical garden.
Another natural attraction is the valley of the Jamna River. It is a nature reserve in the Mikołów area, home to many rare, protected species. The Leśne Pogotowie dla Zwierząt (Forest Animal Rescue Centre) offers an exhibition in Mikołów; visits are by prior arrangement.
Seasonal Activity
Mikołów has a multi-purpose artificial turf field for tennis, football and handball. In winter, it is converted into an artificial ice rink. If the rink is important for your planned dates, check its seasonal availability in advance.
