Żydowo: Lakes, Trails and History

Żydowo brings together a waterside landscape, technological history and historical landmarks. The lakes Kwiecko and Kamienne, a viewpoint at the pumped-storage power station, and routes for walking and cycling each offer something different. The village is also home to a listed half-timbered church and an early medieval burial mound cemetery. When planning your trip, consider whether you are most interested in the landscape, outdoor activities or cultural history.

Lakes and views at the power station

The large lakes Kwiecko and Kamienne are located in the Żydowo village district and are especially popular with tourists and anglers. Kwiecko is also part of the panorama from the viewpoint above the pumped-storage power station: from there, you can also see the power station and the Radew Valley. The viewpoint is near the outlet of the connecting canal to the penstocks.

The pumped-storage power station was commissioned in 1971 and is one of the village’s tourist attractions. In Żydowo, then, the waterside landscape and technological history sit side by side: the view from the viewpoint takes in the power station along with Lake Kwiecko and the Radew Valley. The power station itself is another feature that sets the village apart from a destination focused solely on lakes or hiking.

Hiking trails and a cycling route

The yellow PTTK trail “Łącznikowy Polanów – Żydowo” is numbered ZP-1033-y; it is marked in yellow with a black border. The 12-kilometre route runs from Żydowo to Polanów. If you are planning a trip, the two places give you a clear idea of the route and its length.

The trail is also suitable for cycling. A large part of it follows a paved road. Another trail name associated with Żydowo is “Wzniesień Moreny Czołowej”: the trail starts or ends there.

Half-timbered church and burial mound cemetery

The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Żydowo was built in 1764. Its half-timbered design makes it a distinctive architectural landmark, and the building is protected as a historic monument. It offers a different way to explore the village’s history than the power station: this is a historic church building, rather than the technical facility commissioned in 1971.

An even earlier period is represented by the Żydowo burial mound cemetery. It consists of 22 rectangular and round burial mounds made of stone and earth, which are in varying states of preservation. Archaeologists date the cemetery to the 11th and 12th centuries. Its shapes, materials and date give this site a different historical focus from the church dating to 1764. The “Winniczek” educational trail is also one of Żydowo’s tourist attractions.
