Topics to explore during a stay in Krąg include the castle’s history, a church with Renaissance and Baroque details, Jezioro Zamkowe and designated trails. The town offers a range of points of interest for planning your trip: building phases and historic furnishings sit alongside a park, a lake and designated trails. Whether you are interested first in architecture or in routes through the landscape, both are among the distinct themes of a stay in Krąg.

Podewils Castle and its park

Podewils Castle in Krąg was built in the early 15th century as the former seat of the Podewils family of knights. In 1580, it was demolished down to its foundations and rebuilt in the Renaissance style. The castle took its final form at the end of the 19th century. This sequence of building phases places the structure within a long history that cannot be reduced to a single period of construction.

Because of its beautiful flower gardens, the castle was known as the “Flower Castle” before the war. Today, the historic park covers an area of 2.6 hectares. It extends to the road and to the shore of Jezioro Zamkowe, north of the castle. The lake is almost circular. The park and lake thus also provide a clearly defined landscape setting for the castle’s history.

Church of the Annunciation and historic furnishings

The single-nave brick Church of the Annunciation was built in 1580 by the owners of the nearby castle in the Baroque-Renaissance style. The church’s older section retains a rich collection of Renaissance furnishings: an altar, pulpit, baptismal font and patron’s pew. The castle and church therefore represent different aspects of the town’s history: the changing building phases of a knight’s seat in one case, and preserved furnishings with clearly identified components in the other.

A burial chapel was added to the east side of the church in 1700. It contains original Baroque sarcophagi of the founders Heinrich von Podewils, who died in 1696, and Adam von Podewils, who died in 1697. Heinrich’s sarcophagus is made of brass; Adam’s is made of marble and decorated with sculptures. Their materials and designs distinguish the two tombs in detail as well.

Riding trails and nature paths

The approximately 113-kilometre-long Rittmeister Marek Roszczynialski riding trail passes through Krąg and connects Biały Bór, Drzewiany, Krąg, Polanów, Staniewice and Jarosławiec. A designated riding trail also runs in the area around Krąg and Komorowo. A designated tourist trail passes through Wielin, Buszyno, Krąg and Borkowo in the Malechowo municipality. The places listed and the approximate total length give you a concrete sense of the long riding trail’s reach; the other trail details refer to the area around Krąg or to a route connecting several places.

Well-maintained nature paths start directly behind the buildings of Podewils Castle Hotel and lead to a second, entirely natural forest lake. Alongside the named routes, Krąg thus also offers paths with a specific destination in the landscape. When planning your trip, you can treat the historic sites and different types of trails as distinct points of focus: the church and castle invite you to explore architecture and furnishings, while the riding trails and nature paths draw attention to routes, places and lakes.
