Biskupin combines a major archaeological destination with a seasonal narrow-gauge railway and routes that pass through or end in the town. The surrounding area is also home to other reminders of regional history. Getting there and finding your way
During the tourist season, the Żnińska Kolej Powiatowa, also known as Kolejka Wąskotorowa, runs on the Żnin–Wenecja–Biskupin–Gąsawa route. In Biskupin, its stop is right by the Archaeological Museum. As the railway operates seasonally, check the timetable for your visit dates before travelling.
The Archaeological Museum can also be reached by bus from Żnin or Gąsawa. There is a bus stop in Biskupin, as well as a stop on request at the museum car park. If you plan to use this option, check how to request it as part of your preparations. This lets you consider the railway and bus services as different ways of getting there without assuming a fixed timetable.
Archaeology and regional heritage
The Archaeological Reserve in Biskupin is one of the largest in Europe and covers around 38 hectares. Numerous traces of earlier settlement span the Stone Age through the Early Middle Ages. The reserve is also recognised as a Pomnik Historii. Together, its size, historical span, and heritage designation give an idea of the breadth of the archaeological subject here.
There are also different forms of cultural heritage in the surrounding area. Chata Pałucka is an ethnographic site and is listed in the register of monuments. In Wenecja, fragments of stone and brick walls, along with the courtyard, remain of the castle. These descriptions highlight different aspects: Chata Pałucka is presented in terms of its ethnographic classification and register listing, while the castle is described through the structures that survive today.
The Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum in Wenecja displays a collection of 70 exhibits: steam locomotives, locomotives, rail trolleys, and carriages. The oldest items date from the 19th century. This means you can also take railway history into account when planning your trip, alongside the archaeological focus; the two subjects reflect different interests and are not the same visitor destination.
Routes through and to Biskupin
The Pałucki-Szlak-Rowerowy runs through the built-up area of Biskupin and along the town’s main road. The Szlak śladami prehistorii, by contrast, starts in Złotowo and ends in Biskupin. Check current route conditions before setting off by bike or on foot.
As a regional point of reference, Gmina GÄ…sawa lies on the Szlak Piastowski. This makes it possible to plan a visit to Biskupin with a clear local focus while also placing it in its regional context.
