St. Nicholas Church: Timber Construction and Murals

St. Nicholas Church stands right by the market square and dates from the 17th century. Its construction combines post-and-beam and log-building techniques; it was built of larch wood. This method of construction alone sets the building apart from an ordinary stone church. Inside, the church has a remarkable collection of murals. A striking feature is the late Baroque high altar, which displays an image of Our Lady of Consolation with an embossed silver dress dating from the first half of the 18th century. The parish’s history goes back a long way: the first parish in Gąsawa was established around the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries. This was well before the present-day St. Nicholas Church was built. Viewing Platform and Views Toward Biskupin

A wooden viewing platform stands on the road from Gąsawa to Żnin, with a visitor parking area next to it. Inside the platform, a mosaic depicts the attack on Prince Leszek Biały during the 1227 Congress of Princes. It thus takes a historical event as its subject.

In good weather, the prehistoric settlement at Biskupin can be seen from the platform. Weather conditions are crucial to this view.
