Obidowa lies at an altitude of 750 to 850 metres. The village is considered the highest in the western Gorce Mountains and is the largest village by area in the municipality of Nowy Targ. The mountain area is home to forests considered remnants of the former Carpathian primeval forest. Above the forests lie the Bukowina, Roznowa, Płowowa, Grajcarowa, and Rusnakowa clearings. The upper mountain clearings are dotted with meadows of mountain grasses; until recently, they were used for summer grazing. A few shepherds’ huts have also been preserved in the mountain area. Chapel and Goral Traditions
A chapel shaped like a shepherd’s hut stands in the Rusnakowa clearing. It was built in memory of the first papal pilgrimage to the homeland and the Pope’s stay in Podhale in 1979. Masses for the mountain community are held at the chapel every year on the first Sunday in August; the sermon is in Goral. Planning Cross-Country Skiing and Hiking Trails
The cross-country ski route from Obidowa to the mountain hut at Turbacz is considered suitable for advanced beginners. Allow two to three hours for the ascent to the hut and about one to one and a half hours for the return. The special microclimate creates very good conditions on the route from December through March or April. The seasonal dates provide a general guide for planning a winter stay; the specific dates remain important for your plans.
Hiking trails also help you plan different kinds of walks. A well-travelled trail from Rabka to Turbacz passes through Obidowa.
