Radlin: Industrial History, Tężnia and Walking Routes
Accommodation in Radlin
Radlin can be explored through several distinct facets of its urban history and leisure activities. Its industrial history comes to life along a dedicated route and in buildings with different stories to tell. There are also summer music events, a large swimming pool and a route through Jordanowski Park. This gives you the chance to explore different interests during your stay without reducing everything to a single theme.
Industrial History and Architecture in Radlin
The Szlak Emmy i Marcela is a route in Radlin that lets you discover the city’s local industrial history and the people who worked in the mine, coking plant and power station. If you are interested in the town’s working history, the route offers a specific way to explore this theme.
One significant chapter is Kolonia Emma: the workers’ settlement was built between 1897 and 1913 next to the “Emma” mine. Its buildings on today’s ul. A. Mielęckiego have retained their original appearance. All the houses were built of red brick, with small front gardens by the entrances. The construction period, materials and front gardens bring the settlement to life as a residential complex of its time.
The “Sokolnia” represents another facet of the town’s history. For more than 90 years, residents have associated the building with gymnastics, particularly artistic gymnastics. It was officially opened on 6 and 7 August 1927. It was the first gymnasium of the Towarzystwo “Sokół” in Upper Silesia. While Kolonia Emma tells the story of living next to the mine, the Sokolnia represents local sports history.
The Tężnia and Summer Music in Radlin
The Tężnia solankowa is in the northern part of Radlin, on ul. Wypandów, directly on the border with Rybnik. Set in a green corner, it lies on the Szlak Emmy i Marcela and on the cycling route between Radlin PKP and Zalew Rybnicki. Its historical significance is also noteworthy: it was the first salt graduation tower in an Upper Silesian industrial area and one of the first two in the whole of Silesia.
Recurring music events called “Tężniogrania” take place at the Tężnia in summer. They are organised by the Miejski Ośrodek Kultury w Radlinie. If you would like to include one of these concerts in your stay, check the specific event dates in advance.
Swimming or Getting Outdoors
The large pool at the Miejski Ośrodek Sportu i Rekreacji in Radlin measures 25 × 12.5 metres. It is 1.85 metres deep at its deepest point and 1.3 metres at its shallowest, and has six swimming lanes. There is also an 80-metre water slide. The six lanes define the swimming area, while the 80-metre slide adds another way to enjoy the water.
The large pool also has a jacuzzi tub. It can accommodate five people at a time, and the water temperature is 35 °C. This distinguishes the lanes, slide and tub as different features of the same pool.
For outdoor exercise, Jordanowski Park has a walking and cycling path. It runs from ul. Hallera in central Radlin to the monument to the victims of the Reden shaft. Radlin therefore offers a choice of insights into its industrial and sports history, as well as a park route and water-based activities.
