Industrial history and its traces

A striking landmark is the railway tunnel in Rydułtowy. It is 727 metres long and is considered Poland’s oldest railway tunnel and the longest in Silesia. One important detail for your plans: the tunnel is closed to pedestrian traffic, while trains continue to run through it. The Ścieżka Powstań Śląskich lies above the tunnel; it is a 50-metre route with three wings commemorating the Silesian Uprisings of 1919, 1920 and 1921. The tunnel and the memorial route thus represent different aspects of the same place, although the tunnel itself cannot be crossed on foot.

The industrial heritage also includes preserved multi-storey brick familoki, or workers’ tenement houses, in the “Karol” or “Karola” workers’ colony, popularly known as “Karlik”. Several of these buildings stand between Bema and Strzelców Bytomskich streets, north of the town centre. Buildings associated with old mine shafts have also been preserved in the wider region, in Rydułtowy and its surroundings. A modern shooting range for firearms is operating on the grounds of shaft Leon III, in a former underground training tunnel. This distinctive feature is quite different from the historic structures: it is an active facility, not a relic of the past.

Memorials and architectural history

Several places in Rydułtowy make history visible in different ways. Beside St George’s Church stands a penitential cross, considered Poland’s only double-barred penitential cross and the tallest penitential cross in the Silesian Voivodeship. Its form is also known as a Bożogrobców or Miechowite cross, as well as a Karawaka. The present-day church is a large Neo-Gothic building, consecrated in December 1896.

The Monument of Struggle and Victory is where all official state, regional and local commemorations take place. Another monument commemorates the insurgent Jerzy Dembczyk; it stands at the exact spot where he died. The Zabudowania KWK “Rydułtowy” complex also contains a memorial room in a historic, hundred-year-old building that once housed the small-lot weighbridge. A memorial park has been established at the Evangelical-Augsburg cemetery; its central monument is made from salvaged gravestones and other preserved remains. These places focus on different aspects of remembrance—from church architecture and public commemorations to personal and community memorials.

Geology, trails and relaxation

Skałka is legally protected as a geological documentation site. Carboniferous sandstones of the paralic series are exposed there for geological observation. A walking route leads to the site, one of the few well-preserved outcrops of Carboniferous sandstone in the voivodeship; access for observation is considered convenient. Skałka thus offers a clear contrast to the industrial heritage: here, the focus is on the visible rock formation.

Bodies of water can also be part of your outing plans. Staw Zawalisko can be included in a driving, cycling or walking tour through the most scenic areas around Rydułtowy. Sports enthusiasts meet at Staw Machnikowiec for MTB competitions and cross-country races; the pond is considered a suitable place to relax. The two locations offer different reasons to spend time outdoors, without implying any particular route.

For physical activity, there is also Rydułtowska Fikołkownia RAFA, with a BMX course, skatepark and climbing wall. Those looking for a quieter break can enjoy a saline microclimate at the graduation-tower. Visitors can spend time nearby and rest on wooden loungers; the facility is a municipal wellness and recreation centre.
