Wodzisław Śląski brings together historic buildings, a central town square and a range of active leisure options. For an initial overview, it is worth taking in the contrast between the Rynek, the palace grounds and activities focused on science, exercise and water.

City history between the monastery and the Rynek

The Franciscan monastery complex in Wodzisław Śląski was founded in the 15th century by Władysław, Duke of Opole and Racibórz. The Rynek has been the town’s central square since the 13th century. In chronological terms, its role as the town centre therefore predates the founding of the monastery complex.

One of the town’s most important historic landmarks is Pałac Dietrichsteinów. It is also Poland’s oldest Neoclassical building. Visitors interested in architecture and urban history will find a clear focal point here, while the Rynek provides the historic main square. Baszta Rycerska is another distinctive building: it has been extensively renovated and converted into an observation tower. If you plan to visit, check the current visitor arrangements in advance.

Hands-on activities and a walk at Pałac Dietrichsteinów

The second floor of Pałac Dietrichsteinów houses Strefa Odkrywania, Wyobraźni i Aktywności (SOWA). Its 18 exhibits offer a hands-on way to experience scientific phenomena and the laws of nature. The workshop also hosts workshops and activities involving construction and logical challenges. Alongside the historic architecture, SOWA thus puts the focus on trying things out for yourself. Before planning your visit, check the current visitor arrangements and, if you would like to take part in a workshop, the available dates.

Park Zamkowy is right next to Pałac Dietrichsteinów. It offers space for walks and relaxation. This makes it easy to combine a visit to the palace with time outdoors nearby, without needing to add another activity to your itinerary.

Active leisure: Trzy Wzgórza and Balaton

The “Trzy Wzgórza” family leisure park has tracks for BMX racing, slopestyle, dirt jumping and pump track, as well as a skatepark. The facility brings together several cycling and wheeled-sport options in one place. You can decide which ones interest you based on the specific disciplines.

The bathing beach at the “Balaton” recreation centre is open seasonally. Kayaks, pedal boats and SUP boards can also be hired there; seasonal opening hours for these activities may vary. The difference between “Balaton” and “Trzy Wzgórza” lies in their focus: the former centres on the bathing beach and water activities, while the latter focuses on BMX, pump track and skate facilities. Check the bathing beach’s season dates and the current hire conditions before planning a rental.

Kokoszyce: parkland and historic complex

Monumental trees and distinctive plant species grow in the park of the palace and park complex in Kokoszyce. Alongside its architecture, this gives the grounds a distinctive landscape character. The complex has served as an archdiocesan retreat house for more than 20 years.

Next to the palace stands a former villa from the early 20th century, which houses a chapel. It is also part of the complex. Alongside the palace and parkland, the site therefore includes another historic building with its own function. The villa is an architectural detail of the complex, not simply another of the leisure activities mentioned.

Culture, hands-on discovery or exercise?

For a culture-focused visit, the Rynek, Franciscan monastery complex and Pałac Dietrichsteinów each offer a different connection to the town’s history. SOWA, by contrast, focuses on hands-on discovery; “Trzy Wzgórza” and “Balaton” differ mainly in their sports and water activities. In Kokoszyce, parkland and a historic complex come together. These contrasts can help you organise the themes of your stay around your interests, without reducing the different places to the same kind of experience.
